Autumn city festival in Karlsruhe's city centre with Sunday shopping
Karlsruhe (AGS Stadtkreis 08212) is the second-largest city in Baden-Württemberg and known for its fan-shaped city layout — 32 streets radiate star-like from the palace into the city. At the centre of these fans lie Marktplatz and Kaiserstraße — the stage for the autumn Karlsruhe City Festival. In 2026, the festival runs on Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11 — just in time for the Indian Summer in the city, often with still summery temperatures.
The city festival presents a broad musical programme on several stages in the city centre: Pop, Rock, Schlager, Jazz, Singer-Songwriter, Cover Bands, Stadtkapelle Karlsruhe — from regional bands to national acts. Exact stage locations: Marktplatz (main stage), Friedrichsplatz, Stephansplatz, and Kronenplatz. Live performances throughout the day until late in the evening.
A special feature: the city festival brings international street artists to Karlsruhe — acrobats, mimes, jugglers, and dancers from various European countries perform at distributed locations in the pedestrian zone. A free layer of culture over the festival day, setting it apart from a mere Volksfest (public festival).
Karlsruhe's gastronomy is represented with its own stands and food trucks: regional specialities from the Baden region, international cuisine (Italian, Asian, Mediterranean), food truck classics (pulled pork, burgers, vegan wraps), regional beers (Hoepfner, Vogelbräu), Baden wines from Kaiserstuhl and Bergstraße.
For children, there is a dedicated family programme: bouncy castles, carousels, craft activities, face painting, a children's stage with theatre and interactive activities. Consciously designed to be family-friendly — the city festival is a cross-generational event.
Parallel to the city festival, the traditional Sunday shopping takes place on Sunday, October 11 — the retailers and department stores in Karlsruhe's city centre are open from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The city festival and the shopping Sunday mutually reinforce each other: visitors come for one and take away the other. Admission to the city festival is free.
