Neighborhood street festival around Kalker Post on July 11, 2026 — deck chairs, beach atmosphere, stage program, readings, concerts, and the diversity of the Veedel
Kalkfest is one of the most important neighborhood festivals in eastern Cologne. On Saturday, July 11, 2026, the streets around the Kalker Post will transform into a single festival ground — with stages, deck chairs, international food stalls, and a dense program of activities. Kalkfest differs from commercial city festivals: it is organized by the Kinderschutzbund Köln / Sozialraumkoordination Kalk, is socially oriented, and focuses on the diversity of the Veedel.
For several years, Kalkfest has followed the programmatic guideline “Show Me Your World” — an invitation to the various communities of Kalk to introduce themselves to each other. Turkish, Kurdish, Arab, African, and alternative Cologne initiatives present their culture, their language, their music, their cuisine. The festival is thus less a spectacle and more a space for encounter.
One of the festival's signatures: deck chairs will be set up in the traffic-calmed streets, along with sand beds in some areas, cocktail bars, and cozy lounge areas. Summer vibes in the middle of the Veedel.
At several points, there will be stages with live music — from Turkish folklore to reggae and hip-hop to indie bands from Cologne. The stage program reflects the musical diversity of Kalk.
On a quieter stage at the back of the festival, there will be readings by local authors and chamber music concerts — the literary and cultural poles of the festival.
Social welfare organizations, neighborhood initiatives, sports clubs, migrant associations, and cultural groups will set up activity stands — craft activities for children, discussions about neighborhood initiatives, culinary tasting stations. The international food stalls showcase the full spectrum of Kalk's gastronomy.
Kalk is part of Cologne's District 8 (Kalk) and is located in eastern Cologne. Shaped by its industrial history (Chemische Fabrik Kalk, KHD = Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz) and the subsequent migration of working families. Today, Kalk is one of Cologne's most diverse Veedels — with a high proportion of Turkish and Arab residents, an active creative scene, and many social initiatives. The Kalker Post is the visual center of the Veedel.
The Kinderschutzbund Köln operates a social space coordination for several Cologne districts — an office that networks social, cultural, and neighborhood initiatives and drives district development. The Kalk social space coordination is the organizer of Kalkfest and ensures the continuous networking of initiatives throughout the year.
Social space neighborhood festival that focuses on the diversity of Cologne-Kalk. An encounter format rather than a spectacle, supported by the Kinderschutzbund.
