Franconian Wine and Live Music in the Historic Spital Park
The Juliusspital in Würzburg is one of the oldest and largest social foundations in Germany. Among other things, it operates a winery with 175 hectares of vineyards in Franconia — and once a year, it opens its park for the grand summer wine festival Juliusspital.Open. The historic garden, usually only partially accessible, then becomes a relaxed open-air stage.
The program combines wine tasting and live concerts. At various stations in the park, around 40 wines from current vintages can be sampled — Silvaner, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Spätburgunder, and the more unusual single-vineyard wines from Würzburger Steinhöhen. A guided tasting in the 250m long barrique cellar offers a behind-the-scenes look at wine maturation.
The Juliusspital was founded in 1576 by Prince-Bishop Julius Echter and today functions as a civic hospital, retirement home, and winery. The baroque complex, the Fürstenbau Palace, and the park form one of the most beautiful ensembles in Würzburg's city center. The proceeds from wine activities flow into the foundation's purpose: caring for the sick and elderly.
The summer wine festival traditionally takes place on a Sunday in May. In Würzburg, it's an ideal opportunity to experience the start of the Franconian festival season — the city has a dense cultural program in early summer, with the Mozart Festival, the Africa Festival, and countless courtyard festivals in the wineries along the Main river loop within easy reach.
The 2026 summer wine festival at Juliusspital is officially announced for Sunday, May 10. The park opens in the early afternoon, stages are set up, and a relaxed, unpretentious early summer atmosphere prevails at the tasting and food stations. The 40 wines for tasting range from classic Silvaner and fine Würzburger Stein single-vineyard wines to elegant Spätburgunders and limited bottlings.
A highlight is the tour of the 250m long barrique cellar during the event — a rare opportunity to see the heart of wine maturation. The festival is accompanied by live music in the park pavilion and on the main stage.
