Hamburg's only open-air jazz festival with free admission
Anyone strolling through Planten un Blomen park at the end of August and suddenly following big band sounds or a virtuosic saxophone solo has found Jazz Open Hamburg. Since 1996, Jazzbüro Hamburg e.V. has been transforming the music pavilion in the middle of Neustadt into an open-air stage for jazz — and admission has been free since the beginning.
Typically, ten bands and ensembles perform over two days. The programming combines well-known national and international acts with stars of the Hamburg jazz scene and emerging artists. The NDR Bigband plays every year — and the NDR Jazz editorial team broadcasts selected performances live or time-delayed on NDR Info and NDR Blue.
Jazz Open sees itself as a platform for the Hamburg scene. Local university ensembles, established combos, and experimental projects share the stage with seasoned headliner acts. Free admission and the central location between Dammtor and Stephansplatz make the festival one of the most democratic cultural events of the Hamburg summer — you don't need to bring anything but a good mood and perhaps a blanket.
The Music Pavilion is located in the heart of the Hamburg-Mitte district, Neustadt neighborhood, in one of Germany's most beautiful inner-city parks. The water garden, Japanese garden, and tropical greenhouses invite you to combine the festival with an extended park walk.
Jazz Open Hamburg 2026 will take place on the weekend of August 29 and 30. The venue, as it has been since 1996, is the Music Pavilion in the Planten un Blomen park.
The exact order of bands will be published by Jazzbüro Hamburg shortly before the festival — the programming follows the same rhythm each year: two days, one pavilion, ten acts.
The 2026 lineup will be announced by Jazzbüro Hamburg in the weeks leading up to the festival on the official website. Based on experience, the program is distributed as follows:
