About Jazz Open

Since 1996, the music pavilion in the Planten un Blomen park has transformed into an open-air stage for jazz from Hamburg, Germany, and the world at the end of August. Jazz Open Hamburg is the city's only jazz festival with free admission — around 10,000 visitors experience ten bands and ensembles over two days, from NDR Bigband classics to the young Hamburg scene. Organized by Jazzbüro Hamburg e.V., funded by the Ministry of Culture and Media.

Hamburg's Jazz Summer Ritual

Anyone strolling through Planten un Blomen park at the end of August and suddenly following big band sounds or a virtuosic saxophone solo has found Jazz Open Hamburg. Since 1996, Jazzbüro Hamburg e.V. has been transforming the music pavilion in the middle of Neustadt into an open-air stage for jazz — and admission has been free since the beginning.

Program Between Classics and Hamburg Newcomers

Typically, ten bands and ensembles perform over two days. The programming combines well-known national and international acts with stars of the Hamburg jazz scene and emerging artists. The NDR Bigband plays every year — and the NDR Jazz editorial team broadcasts selected performances live or time-delayed on NDR Info and NDR Blue.

Open Air Without an Entrance Fee

  • Two days of programming, one main stage at the Music Pavilion
  • No admission fee, no security checks, no VIP areas
  • Around 10,000 visitors in good weather
  • Information stand on-site with CD sales and networking opportunities

More Than Just a Concert Format

Jazz Open sees itself as a platform for the Hamburg scene. Local university ensembles, established combos, and experimental projects share the stage with seasoned headliner acts. Free admission and the central location between Dammtor and Stephansplatz make the festival one of the most democratic cultural events of the Hamburg summer — you don't need to bring anything but a good mood and perhaps a blanket.

Nestled in Planten un Blomen Park

The Music Pavilion is located in the heart of the Hamburg-Mitte district, Neustadt neighborhood, in one of Germany's most beautiful inner-city parks. The water garden, Japanese garden, and tropical greenhouses invite you to combine the festival with an extended park walk.

Jazz Open — edition 2026

On the weekend of August 29 and 30, 2026, Jazzbüro Hamburg once again invites you to Jazz Open in the Planten un Blomen park. For two days, around ten bands and ensembles will perform on the Music Pavilion stage — from Hamburg combos to national and international guests — with free admission.

Jazz Open Hamburg 2026 will take place on the weekend of August 29 and 30. The venue, as it has been since 1996, is the Music Pavilion in the Planten un Blomen park.

2026 Program Lines

  • Ten bands and ensembles over two days
  • Focus on the Hamburg scene, complemented by national and international acts
  • Performance by the NDR Bigband (traditional program item)
  • Live and recorded broadcasts by NDR Info and NDR Blue
  • Information stand and CD sales on-site

The exact order of bands will be published by Jazzbüro Hamburg shortly before the festival — the programming follows the same rhythm each year: two days, one pavilion, ten acts.
