Birthday of a Hamburg Urban Culture Concept

The Hamburg Playhouses are a form of child and youth work anchored in Hamburg – non-commercial houses where children and young people from the neighbourhood can play, learn, craft, and meet for free. The Spielfest is the annual birthday of this movement, celebrated in the middle of Hamburg's central park.

Wallanlagen as Festival Grounds

The festival takes place in the Wallanlagen in Planten un Blomen – the historic city fortifications, now a green recreational area between the city centre, exhibition halls, and the Karoviertel. On this day, the Hamburg Playhouses transform the Wallanlagen into a huge playground with stations, workshops, creative offerings, movement games, and a stage programme.

Last Day of the Summer Holidays

The Spielfest takes place on the last day of the Hamburg summer holidays – as a joint transition into the new school year. Admission and all hands-on activities are free.
