Jazz City Bilk — when a district becomes a festival

Do you associate jazz festivals with large concert halls, fixed seating, and ticket prices starting at €80? Jazz City Bilk does it differently. The festival is an urban, decentralized format that transforms an entire Düsseldorf district – Bilk – into a five-day jazz world. The third edition from May 6th to 10th, 2026, continues this concept: over 30 concerts in more than 13 locations, genres ranging from classical jazz to Latin, flamenco, and psychedelic, as well as dance collaborations with the Ballett am Rhein.

Bilk — Düsseldorf's artists' quarter

Bilk is one of Düsseldorf's largest and most diverse districts, located south of the old town between the university hospital and the Rhine promenade. The district has been shaped by a young cultural and artistic scene for years — loft apartments in old industrial buildings, a high concentration of clubs, studios, and creative offices. It is precisely this atmosphere that makes Bilk the ideal stage for an urban jazz festival that doesn't take place in a high-culture concert hall, but in the spaces where people live and work.

The most important locations

The festival heart beats in the Jazz-Schmiede, one of Düsseldorf's most renowned jazz venues with a 50-year history as a stage for German and international jazz. Complemented by:

• Bürgersaal Bilk — larger concerts with a traditional seated audience
• Metropol-Kino — concert-film double features
• Bilker Kirchplatz — open-air concerts (weather permitting)
• Stage 47 — smaller club with alternative programming
• various pubs, churches, and galleries for special slots

Bilker Pub Rally — the heart of the festival

The most exciting format is the Bilker Pub Rally on Friday, May 8th, 2026. All evening long, 10 bands play in 10 pubs, plus 3 DJ sets in larger venues — over 13 pubs and bars in Bilker Allee, Düsselstraße, and Suitbertusstraße are open. Free entry — you can move between venues as you please and take in whatever you like best. A map of Bilk with pub addresses and bands will be published a few days beforehand on jazzcitybilk.com.

Genre diversity — no jazz purism

The festival deliberately positions itself broadly. Classical acoustic jazz sits alongside Latin jazz, flamenco fusion, psychedelic improvisations, and dance collaborations with the Ballett am Rhein of the Düsseldorf Rheinoper. International artists meet local Bilk musicians — the patron formulated it this way: “international artists meet local scene figures, classical formats meet experimental projects.”

Düsseldorf is the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, an independent city in the administrative district of Düsseldorf, with around 630,000 inhabitants. Bilk is located in the south of the city and is excellently accessible by subway (lines 71, 77, 78, 79) and S-Bahn (S6, S8, S28). The Düsseldorf Cultural Office, the Opera am Rhein, and numerous Bilk businesses support the festival.
