Japanese Cinema, Hamburg Address
The Japan Film Festival Hamburg (JFFH) has been a fixture in the German festival landscape since 1999 and is the most significant festival for Japanese cinema in the German-speaking world. Supported voluntarily by the association Nihon Media e.V., the festival brings over 60 films from Japan to Hamburg every year in June.
Three Sections, Three Hamburg Arthouse Cinemas
The program is divided into three streams:
- Naginata – controversial, experimental films
- Noh / Arthouse – award-winning Japanese festival entries
- Rakugo – comedies and entertaining genre films
Screenings take place in the traditional Hamburg arthouse cinemas Metropolis (Neustadt), Studio Kino (Altstadt), and 3001 Kino (Schanzenviertel) – all located in the Hamburg-Mitte or Altona districts.
Audience Award and Japanese Guests
For years, the festival has maintained its character as a meeting platform. Japanese directors, producers, and actors regularly travel to Hamburg to present their work and discuss it with the audience. The Audience Award is a firmly established feature – every vote contributes to deciding which film wins the festival.
Hamburg and Japan
Hamburg has maintained close ties with Japan for decades, and the Japanese community is one of the largest in Germany. The JFFH is part of this cultural bridge and is supported by, among others, the Japanese Consulate General and the Japan Foundation.
