Anniversary edition of the European Neighbours' Day with over 60 district actions
The European Neighbours' Day (Fête des Voisins) was initiated in 1999 by Parisian politician Atanase Périfan with the aim of loosening up anonymous relationships in urban residential areas and encouraging neighbours to meet. Hannover has been participating in the initiative since 2006. With its 20th edition in 2026, it celebrates an anniversary that underscores the importance of good neighbourliness in an increasingly diverse urban society.
Unlike centralised major events, Neighbours' Day is a decentralised format. Over 60 individual actions will be organised in 2026 in various districts, housing communities, neighbourhood initiatives, and district centres. The City of Hannover and hanova coordinate the overall format, provide funding and material support (e.g., marquees, benches, loudspeakers, promotional materials), and communicate the programme. However, the specific organisation of the actions lies with the local initiatives.
The range of actions is broad. Communal barbecues are classic — the housing block, the street, or the neighbourhood meets at the grill, everyone brings something, and conversations flow. International buffets utilise the cultural diversity of Hannover's districts — Turkish, Syrian, Italian, Vietnamese, Polish, African, and Western European specialities are shared on a common table. Music and dance performances are presented by local bands, school choirs, international dance groups, or amateur musicians. Creative hands-on activities range from street painting with chalk and planting flower beds to jointly building insect hotels.
Behind all this lies a clear objective: that people living in close proximity get to know each other and become more aware of each other in everyday life. Anonymity is one of the downsides of urban living — Neighbours' Day aims to counteract this with low-threshold, friendly occasions. Studies show that good neighbourly relations increase life satisfaction, reduce loneliness, and improve safety in the neighbourhood.
hanova is Hannover's municipal housing company with over 13,000 apartments in the city. Its participation in Neighbours' Day is part of a broader approach to actively promote social cohesion in its residential areas. Janitors, tenant councils, and neighbourhood managers support tenant communities in planning and carrying out the events.
The complete list of actions will be published on hannover.de and on a dedicated action map. Those who don't find an event in their district can register their own — the city and hanova support newcomers with advice and materials. This is how the movement continues to grow year after year.
The complete list of over 60 events will be published on hannover.de with an action map.
