500 years of tradition around the Schafsee lake in Hohenlohe
Few summer festivals in southern Germany can boast such a long history as the Jacobi-Sommerfest in Schrozberg. In 1488, the small town on the edge of the Hohenlohe region received market rights from Emperor Frederick III — and since then, Schrozberg has celebrated every year on the weekend before St. James' Day (July 25th). In the 20th century, the festival evolved into its current form: from July 17th to 21st, 2026, the Jacobi-Sommerfest will take place over five days of festivities around the Schafsee lake.
The festival grounds are picturesquely situated around the Schafsee — a small, artificially created lake within Schrozberg. The large festival tent stands directly by the water, while the amusement rides and market stalls are spread along the lake's shore. The Schafsee serves as both a backdrop and a mirror to the festive atmosphere — the firework display on Sunday evening utilizes the water as a visual element.
The program spans five days. Thursday and Friday are dominated by live music in the festival tent — political evenings, bands from the region, youth events. Saturday is the main festival day with the HAKRO city run (a sporting event organized by Schrozberger HAKRO GmbH, one of the region's largest employers), followed by a highlight in the festival tent with a headliner band in the evening. Sunday is dedicated to the parade (traditionally at 1:30 PM) featuring schools, kindergartens, and clubs, a morning pint (Frühschoppen) in the festival tent, and the grand firework display over the Schafsee in the evening. The market stalls selling clothing, household goods, and toys will be open from July 18th to 20th around the lake.
A sporting tradition in the festival calendar is the HAKRO city run on Saturday afternoon at 5 PM. Schrozberg is home to HAKRO GmbH, one of Germany's most important textile printers and the town's main employer. The city run, named after the company, covers several distances through Schrozberg's town center — a children's run (Bambini), a school run, and a 10 km main run. It's a sporting activation of the town festival weekend with high participation from the Schrozberg community.
Schrozberg, a small town with around 5,600 inhabitants in the Schwäbisch Hall district, is located in the northern Hohenlohe region on the border with Bavaria. The town looks back on a long history as a market town — its market rights from 1488 are among the first documented in the region. Today, Schrozberg is primarily known for HAKRO GmbH, one of the world's leading companies for workwear and textile printing. This industrial base enables the small town to afford a 5-day festival weekend with considerable infrastructure.
