Heart of the anniversary year with a festive parade, Grand Tattoo, and musical fireworks
In 1276, King Rudolf von Habsburg granted Germersheim its city rights – marking the beginning of a city history shaped by fortress construction, destruction, French and German rule, military significance in the 19th century, and finally its transformation into a civilian university city. 750 years after this date, the city is using the anniversary as an occasion for an entire anniversary year in 2026 with concerts, exhibitions, lectures, and festivals. The festival weekend in August is the central highlight.
The historical parade 'Germersheim in the Course of Time' is the centerpiece of the weekend. Groups from all over Europe will represent eras of the city's history: Middle Ages, Renaissance, early modern fortress construction, Napoleonic era, the German Empire, interwar period, and post-war decades. Historical associations from Alsace, Bavaria, and Southern Germany will travel to participate, and the parade will wind through the city center, passing by the landmarks of the fortress.
A military-historical highlight is the Grand Tattoo, which references Germersheim's military past without glorifying it. The musical ceremony, featuring torchbearers, a drum corps, and marching music, is contrasted by a musical fireworks display launched over the fortress, concluding the weekend with a spectacular visual show.
Throughout the three days, there will be stage concerts, a historical market, culinary stands featuring Germersheim's gastronomy, city tours focusing on the fortress history, performances by local clubs, children's programs, and exhibitions. The fortress, Paradeplatz, Fronte Lamotte, and the central squares of the old town will be used for events.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the City of Germersheim on the pages germersheim.eu/stadtjubilaeum. The key points mentioned here are confirmed by official city communications and press pre-coverage in the Wochenblatt-Reporter and on pfalz.de.
