101st Winzertanz — a four-day folk and wine festival with historical choreography
The Niederstetten Autumn Festival is one of the most traditional wine and folk festivals in the northern Hohenlohe region of Baden-Württemberg. The festival has been celebrated annually on the last weekend of September since 1925, with the Winzertanz at its core — a choreography that has remained practically unchanged since then, passed down through generations in Niederstetten. 2026 will mark the celebration of the 101st Winzertanz — a remarkable anniversary.
The Winzertanz is a choreographic performance featuring traditional costumes: men in red, women in green. The entire ensemble performs a set sequence of figures symbolizing the wine year — planting vines, tending, harvesting, pressing, drinking. The choreography is performed exactly the same year after year; it is a living piece of intangible cultural heritage that has hardly changed since its inception in 1925. The oldest active dancer traditionally leads the group.
On festival Sunday (September 27th, 2026), the grand parade will march through Niederstetten. Each year under a different motto, featuring floats, riding groups, music clubs, and friendly carnival and traditional costume associations from Hohenlohe and neighboring Bavaria. Following the parade, the Winzertanz will be performed on the festival grounds — the highlight of the entire festival weekend.
The festival has two main locations: the festival grounds on the outskirts with a classic folk festival program (carousels, food stalls, beer tent with live music in the evening) and the Niederstetten town center with a wine fountain in front of the town hall and a French wine stand at Le-Plessis-Bouchard-Platz (named after the French partner municipality). Both locations complement each other: folk festival bustle on the grounds, cozy wine atmosphere in the town center.
Festival Monday (September 28th, 2026) is Family Day with a special children's program. A "Colorful Children's Meadow" for children aged 3 and up will open, and occasionally a helicopter will even land for visitor activities. Carousels and game stalls will offer reduced prices, and the program is tailored for younger families.
Niederstetten is directly connected to Würzburg and the Liebliches Taubertal region via the Tauberbahn railway. The station is about a 10-minute walk from the festival grounds — a convenient journey used by many families from Würzburg, Bad Mergentheim, and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Registrations for the 2026 festival parade can be made via festival coordinator Sandra Neckermann (07932 9102-13).
Niederstetten is located in the Main-Tauber district in the Franconian northeast of Baden-Württemberg, in the valley of the Vorbach stream, which flows into the Tauber. The former castle town with Haltenbergstetten Castle (built around 1200) and its approximately 5,000 inhabitants borders Bavaria and is part of the tourist region "Liebliches Taubertal.".
The 2026 edition marks the 101st Winzertanz. Following the 100th-anniversary celebration in 2025, the Niederstetten tradition enters its second century. The festival adheres to the choreography proven over decades: four days of festivities, a clear division of tasks between the festival grounds and the town center, a highlight on festival Sunday with the parade and Winzertanz, and Family Day on Monday.
The Winzertanz itself — men in red, women in green, an exactly preserved sequence of figures — remains the centerpiece. The choreography is performed on the festival grounds following the grand parade, traditionally under the guidance of the oldest active dancer.
