30th Anniversary Edition — International Competition for Contemporary Solo Performance
In 1997, the Solo Dance Theater Festival began as a small platform for solo performances in contemporary dance. Today, it is one of Europe's most important solo competitions — a partner of the European Festivals Association (EFA), collaborating with dance houses in Brazil, Cyprus, Israel, Spain, Austria, Italy, Denmark, and Switzerland. The 30th anniversary edition in 2026 marks a milestone that garners international attention in the contemporary dance scene.
Both emerging and established choreographers submit solo productions. An international jury selects the final acts. During the festival, artists present their pieces to the audience and jury, followed by the awarding of prizes and accolades. The winners embark on an international tour starting in November 2026, realized through partner organizations in several countries — a significant career platform for aspiring choreographers.
The venue is the Treffpunkt Rotebühlplatz, the cultural and educational center of VHS Stuttgart. Three stages are spread across the building — the main stage in the large hall, a studio for more intimate pieces, and the foyer for after-show gatherings. The atmosphere is focused and professional, not boisterously festive: the audience comes to watch, discuss, and compare.
The festival doesn't stand alone: Solo Choreo (in its 7th edition in 2026) is a regional platform for Stuttgart-based choreographers, opening the festival on March 11. Solo Dialog and SoloConnection expand the concept with discussion formats, workshops, and mentoring programs. Thus, the festival is not only a competition but also a meeting point for the international solo dance scene.
The 2026 edition is a special one: 30 years of the Solo Dance Theater Festival Stuttgart. Five days of programming featuring an international competition, discussion forums, workshops, and a celebratory awards ceremony on Sunday.
The festival opens on Wednesday, March 11, with Solo Choreo — the local platform for Stuttgart choreographers. From March 12 to 15, the international competition evenings will follow.
