Ingolstadt's biggest city festival — by citizens for citizens
With over 140,000 inhabitants, Ingolstadt is Bavaria's fifth-largest city, an independent city, and the headquarters of Audi AG. For decades, the Bürgerfest has been the central, open city festival, filling the historic old town with music, gastronomy, and market activities for two full days. The festival mile stretches from the Kreuztor — Ingolstadt's striking late-Gothic city gate and landmark — through the entire pedestrian zone to the Rathausplatz.
Previously, the Bürgerfest was organized by the City of Ingolstadt's Cultural Office (most recently mostly biennially). For 2026, a voluntary citizens' initiative has formed: City Councilor Karl Ettinger, City Council Candidate Oli Munz, and the Innenstadtfreunde Ingolstadt are taking responsibility. The motto "A Festival by Citizens for Citizens" is programmatic — the festival is intended to take place annually in the future, supported by the city community.
Due to its scale (tens of thousands of visitors), the Bürgerfest is a complex event in terms of safety. The organizers of the 2026 edition, in coordination with the police, THW (Technical Relief Agency), city administration, and security services, have developed a new safety concept that keeps the format viable despite voluntary management.
Ingolstadt is the center of the Bavarian Region 10 (comprising the districts of Eichstätt, Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, and Pfaffenhofen). The Bürgerfest is not just a city event but also the weekend when residents from the entire region flock to the city on the Danube.
After being organized biennially by the Ingolstadt Cultural Office, the Bürgerfest returns in a new form in 2026: supported by volunteers, planned annually. The festival mile will stretch across the entire pedestrian zone from the Kreuztor to the Rathausplatz on July 10th and 11th.
Several stages along the route will feature live music, complemented by walk-acts, a dedicated children's and youth program, as well as sports and interactive stations. Ingolstadt's gastronomy and showmen will be present with stalls. The exact stage and band program will be successively announced by the organizers in the spring of 2026.
The detailed 2026 program was successively communicated by the organizers (Citizens' Initiative Karl Ettinger / Innenstadtfreunde) in the run-up. Updates available on the city's platforms and via the citizens' initiative.
