Ten-day spring Volksfest with Brandl beer tent and Kapplerbräu Altomünster beer
Markt Indersdorf – the market town in the Dachau district, about 35 km northwest of Munich – celebrates its major Volksfest every year at the beginning of May on the festival grounds at Am Wehr 1. For over ten days, the area transforms into a typical Bavarian festival site with a beer tent, carousels, food stalls, and plenty of atmosphere. The Volksfest is free admission, offering families an affordable leisure alternative in the north of Munich.
The centerpiece of the Volksfest is the large Brandl family beer tent – a family business that has been operating beer tents in Bavaria since 1925. Inside the tent, the special festival beer from the nearby Altomünster-based brewery Kapplerbräu flows – a traditional Bavarian brewery that brews a festival beer specifically for the Indersdorfer Volksfest every year. The beer tent kitchen offers classic Bavarian dishes of "finest quality" and regional specialties.
The Volksfest traditionally kicks off on the first Friday evening with a festive opening ceremony: traditional costume groups, brass bands, and clubs parade from the market square to the beer tent. Afterwards, the first Mayor Franz Obesser performs the traditional beer tapping, officially opening the festival. The opening is hosted by festival speaker Franz Neumüller. Afterwards, the festival band plays until late into the night.
Next to the beer tent is a classic amusement park run by the Diebold family of showmen: Ferris wheel, bumper cars, children's carousels, wave flyers, food stalls, and game booths. Wednesdays are Children's and Family Day with reduced prices for carousels and food – a tradition that makes the Volksfest a family meeting point for the region.
Markt Indersdorf is located in the north of the Dachau district, on the Glonn river. The town is primarily known for its former Augustinian Canons' Monastery Indersdorf (founded in 1132, now the main street of the municipality). The Volksfest has been the social highlight of spring for decades.
The 2026 edition of the Indersdorfer Volksfest will be celebrated from Friday, May 8th, to Sunday, May 17th, 2026, on the Am Wehr 1 festival grounds. The organizer is Markt Indersdorf, the beer tent is run by the Brandl family, and the amusement park by the Diebold family.
The Volksfest will be ushered in on Friday evening with the traditional parade and the beer tapping by the first mayor Franz Obesser – hosted by Franz Neumüller. In the beer tent, the specially brewed festival beer from Kapplerbräu Altomünster will then flow.
