Folk and Heritage Festival with Marquee, Wiesn Delicacies, and Amusement Park
Hunderdorf is located in the western Bavarian Forest, in the district of Straubing-Bogen, nestled in the hilly Danube landscape. With the administrative community of Hunderdorf-Neukirchen-Windberg, the town is one of the vibrant centers of this rural region. The annual Hunderdorfer Folk and Heritage Festival is the social highlight of the village calendar, attracting visitors from the entire Gäuboden and the Bavarian Forest.
The festival traditionally spans four days, from Friday to Monday — a classic Bavarian festival week with all the elements that define a heritage festival.
The festival kicks off with a band concert and the traditional beer tapping ceremony by Mayor Max Höcherl. With the first "O'zapft is!" (It's tapped!), the festival marquee opens, guests flock in, and the festival begins.
Saturday is Youth Day. The regional band Notausstieg electrifies the festival marquee with their energy — perfect mood music for the younger generation and everyone who loves to dance on the benches.
Sunday brings the full spectrum of folk festival traditions: a festive church service in the morning, followed by an oldtimer parade with historic vehicles, tractors, and traditional costume bands through the town. In the evening, the band "Die WoidRocker" takes over the festival marquee stage — the finest Lower Bavarian forest rock.
Monday begins with the traditional Weißwurst breakfast. In the afternoon, there's the Children's and Seniors' Afternoon — a multi-generational program that anchors the festival in the village community. In the evening, the Club and Business Celebration marks the festival's conclusion.
In the large festival marquee, festival beer from a regional brewery flows freely. The festival catering serves classic Wiesn specialties — pork knuckles, roast chicken, pork shoulder, sausages, accompanied by smooth beer in liter steins. In front of the marquee, around the festival grounds, the large amusement park is set up: carousels, roller coasters, shooting galleries, haunted houses, candy stalls — everything that belongs to a classic Bavarian folk festival.
Several bands and local groups perform during the festival — from the Blaskapelle Hunderdorf to regional acts. This musical diversity ensures that the festival marquee is lively from Friday to Monday.
The Hunderdorfer Volksfest is among the most vibrant heritage festivals in the western Bavarian Forest. Anyone wanting to experience an authentic Lower Bavarian folk festival — without the tourist crowds of the larger festivals in Straubing or Deggendorf — will find it here. The mix of genuine village community, traditional customs, and folk festival atmosphere is what makes its charm.
The Hunderdorfer Volksfest 2026 will take place from Friday, May 22nd, to Monday, May 25th, 2026, at the festival grounds. The municipality of Hunderdorf is organizing the four-day heritage festival with all the classic elements: a festival marquee with regional beer, Wiesn specialties, a large amusement park, and a packed musical program.
Highlights on Friday evening include the beer tapping ceremony by Mayor Max Höcherl and the opening band concert. On Saturday, Youth Day with the band Notausstieg will bring energy to the festival marquee. Sunday combines a festive church service, an oldtimer parade, and an energetic concert by "Die WoidRocker" in the evening. Monday traditionally concludes the festival with Weißwurst breakfast, a children's and seniors' afternoon, and the club and business celebration.
