Bogen on the Danube Bend — Town with Folk Festival Tradition
The Lower Bavarian town of Bogen in the district of Straubing-Bogen lies on the southern Bavarian Forest, where the Danube makes a distinctive loop. With around 11,000 inhabitants, Bogen is small enough for a real folk festival atmosphere and large enough for a fully developed festival tent operation. The annual Volks- und Heimatfest is one of the most important dates in the town's calendar.
Festzelt Heppenheimer in Blue and White
The heart of the festival is the Festzelt Heppenheimer on the festival grounds at Kotaustraße 7. Decorated in a classic blue-and-white Bavarian style, it offers VIP boxes, a central catering area, and a spacious beer garden. The festival beer comes from the Karmeliten-Brauerei from Straubing — one of the oldest breweries in Lower Bavaria.
Program Pillars Over Five Days
- Friday: Concert in front of the festival tent with local music bands, followed by the festival opening with the tapping of the first keg by Mayor Franz Walter at 7:15 PM
- Saturday: Vintage car meet in the morning (9:30 AM – 11:30 AM), in the evening youth night with the band Party Alarm
- Sunday: Frühschoppen (morning pint), children's program with the Donikkl-Crew (2:00 PM – 3:30 PM), in the evening awards ceremony with sports honorees
- Monday: Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) evening with music – the nearby Bundeswehr garrison is traditionally involved in the festival
- Tuesday: Family Day with discounted children's drinks and free Punch and Judy show
Heimatfest with Lower Bavarian Identity
The festival consciously emphasizes the Heimat (homeland) component — unlike purely commercial folk festivals, Bogen relies on the participation of local clubs, the honoring of athletes, and program items with local relevance. The Bogener Rautentage or the Bogenberger Pfingstkerzenwallfahrt (Pentecost Candle Pilgrimage) are other traditional festivals that complement the town's identity profile — the Volks- und Heimatfest is their summer highlight.
