Traditional market on Whit Monday in the Vaihingen district of Horrheim — market, gastronomy, and wine enjoyment
The Horrheim Pfingstmarkt has a unique character among Swabian Pentecost markets: it takes place in a wine-growing village. Horrheim is a district of Vaihingen an der Enz (Ludwigsburg district, AGS 08118) and is located on the Stromberg — a hilly wine landscape between Heilbronn and Bietigheim-Bissingen. The Horrheim Winegrowers' Cooperative, one of the region's traditional wine producers, is a co-organizer and naturally brings local wine as the main beverage to the market.
The venue is the historic village center of Horrheim. The Krämermarkt (traders' market) extends along the main street and the central market square with the Protestant church in the background. The assortment is diverse:
Most stalls are operated by traveling market vendors from southern Germany, with some regional providers from Vaihingen, Bietigheim, and the Stromberg region. In total, around 50–80 stalls, depending on registrations.
The culinary aspect is the second strength of the festival — as a wine-growing village, Horrheim serves its own wines on Whit Monday. The Horrheim Winegrowers' Cooperative sets up a wine stand offering tastings of local Trollinger, Lemberger, Riesling, and Schwarzriesling. Wine spritzers, Federweißer (young wine), and sparkling wine from the cooperative are also available. Catering is supplemented by local clubs with barbecue stands, Maultaschen (Swabian dumplings), fries, and non-alcoholic drinks.
Horrheim was incorporated into Vaihingen in 1970 and is now a district with just under 2,500 inhabitants. Its location on the southern slope of the Stromberg makes it a classic wine-growing village — viticulture has shaped the landscape for centuries. The Horrheim Winegrowers' Cooperative, founded in the 19th century, unites most of Horrheim's winegrowers and is now an important source of Baden-Swabian quality wines.
Pentecost markets have a long tradition in southern Germany — they often mark the beginning of the summer market season and are a reliable fixture in many small towns and villages. The Horrheim Pfingstmarkt shares this tradition with other Pentecost markets in the region (Ehningen Pentecost Market, Köngen Pentecost Market, etc.) — and stands out for its distinct wine focus.
The market follows a Swabian Pentecost market format:
The stalls open, and the first traders set up their displays. Residents and early visitors arrive.
The Horrheim Winegrowers' Cooperative begins its tastings — Trollinger, Lemberger, Riesling, and Schwarzriesling are available for sampling. Standing tables around the wine stand invite visitors to linger.
The festival area fills up. Families from Vaihingen, Bietigheim, and the Stromberg region come for market shopping and lunch. The club barbecue stands start serving bratwurst, steaks, and Maultaschen.
A children's carousel, a wheel of fortune, and possibly a small bouncy castle provide entertainment for children. Sometimes a live music group (Schlager, brass band music) plays in the main area.
Last purchases, wine spritzers in the afternoon, pleasant atmosphere in the spring sunshine. The first stalls begin dismantling around 5 p.m.
Official end. The Horrheim Cooperative and the clubs clear their stands.
