Traditional Sommertag procession and four-day Volksfest at Kerweplatz Oggersheim, kicking off the Kirmes season
The Sommertag is an old southwestern German spring custom, particularly cherished in the Palatinate, Baden, and parts of Hesse. Children parade through the streets with decorated Sommertagsstecken, singing Sommertag songs and symbolically banishing winter. In Ludwigshafen-Oggersheim, this tradition is combined with a four-day Volksfest and a traditional procession.
The Sommertag annually opens the Kirmes season in Ludwigshafen. It is followed by the Sommertag Mundenheim, the Frühlingsfest Gartenstadt, the Pfingstweidefest, and throughout the year, numerous district Kerwen (fairs). Thus, the festival in Oggersheim serves as both the season's beginning and a highlight in its own right.
From Friday, March 13th, to Monday, March 16th, 2026, the Sommertag unfolds with daily festivities at Kerweplatz Oggersheim. Rides – including the thrilling Crash Zone and the Königs-Rad'l in 2026 – alongside smaller children's carousels, game stalls, and food vendors define the festival grounds.
The weekend's highlights are the Sommertag procession on Sunday and the Family Day with reduced prices. The procession winds through the center of Oggersheim, starting from Schillerplatz and ending at Kerweplatz. Associations, kindergartens, children's groups, and the district association participate.
Oggersheim is one of Ludwigshafen's most populous districts, retaining its distinct character with its church, castle, market square, and community life. The Sommertag and the Oggersheim Kerwe in September are the annual highlights.
The festival grounds at Kerweplatz become a Volksfest backdrop for four days. The Sommertag procession is a traditional highlight on Sunday.
The exact start time of the procession and the accompanying program for 2026 will be published in due course by the Oggersheim district association. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
