Advent atmosphere in the Homburg district — mulled wine, club life, Church of the Resurrection
Reiskirchen, a district of Homburg in the Saarpfalz-Kreis, has retained its village character — even in Advent. When the first fairy lights are switched on at the houses, the small, club-supported Reiskirchen Christmas Market opens on the festival grounds in front of the Protestant Church of the Resurrection. It is one of the district markets with which Homburg, alongside the central St. Nicholas Market on the historic market square and the Christmas Village at Christian-Weber-Platz, brings the entire city into the Advent spirit.
Unlike the large commercial markets, Reiskirchen is a club and neighborhood market. Local groups — sports club, fire department, church community, kindergarten — run stalls with homemade cookies, gingerbread, homemade jams, bratwurst, crêpes, mulled wine, and children's punch. Handmade gift ideas from the region complete the offering: candles, pottery, knitted and crocheted items.
A brass choir and school choir provide the musical accompaniment — mostly classic German Christmas carols, occasionally a solo performance by regional singers. The open Church of the Resurrection invites moments of reflection, often with Advent meditations or small services.
St. Nicholas himself visits the children, bringing small bags for the little ones. Craft activities, gingerbread decorating, and decorating a Christmas tree are among the regular program items. The atmosphere is familial and relaxed — those looking for an experience away from the big crowds will find it here.
Reiskirchen is located north of the Homburg city center and has retained its village character despite being incorporated. The Church of the Resurrection, the old rectory, and the surrounding festival grounds form the social center of the district. The university city of Homburg in the Saarpfalz-Kreis can be reached in a few minutes via the Saarbahn line S1 or the A6 motorway.
