The district market of Erbach at Luitpoldplatz — Advent atmosphere in the Saarpfalz district
Erbach is a district of the district and university town of Homburg in the Saarpfalz district. A little off the beaten track from the large city center Christmas markets, a district Christmas market has been established here since 2003, drawing its charm precisely from this status: not a mega-event with external showmen, but a two-day meeting point for Erbach's clubs, schools, and church communities on the central Luitpoldplatz.
The premiere of the Christmas market coincided with the redesign of Luitpoldplatz — until then, a traffic square that had seen better days, which received a new focal point for Erbach with its renovation in the early 2000s. The Working Group of Clubs of the District Conference, together with the local council, used the newly prepared square to give the district its own Advent market.
The program follows the typical Saarland district market choreography: huts and stalls from local clubs, from the sports club to the fire department to the church choir; mulled wine, punch, bratwurst, gingerbread, waffles; hand-knitted and crafted items; a stall with Christmas tree decorations. School choirs and brass bands provide the musical accompaniment on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, and St. Nicholas traditionally comes with gifts for the children.
Homburg, with around 42,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of the Saarpfalz district and a focal point of the Saarland-Palatinate transition region. The town is known for its University Hospital (site of the Medical Faculty of Saarland University), for the Schlossberghöhlen — the largest sandstone caves in Europe — and for the Schwarzenacker Roman Museum. The Erbach market is part of a whole network of small Advent markets in the town area (city center, Schwarzenacker, Beeden, Erbach), each occupying different weekends.
Visitors arriving from the Palatinate or western Saarland will find a relaxed market on Luitpoldplatz for strolling: no giant queues at the mulled wine stand, no dance floor until midnight, but a meeting point where neighbors chat, children tug at St. Nicholas, and the scent of cinnamon is distinct. Ideal as a second stop on an Advent weekend in Homburg — combinable with a stroll through the city center, a walk to the Schlossberg, or a guided tour of the Schlossberghöhlen.
The date for 2026 will likely be announced in autumn 2026 by the city of Homburg or the Erbach Working Group of Clubs. We will update the details as soon as the exact dates are confirmed. As a rule, the market runs for two days on the first Advent weekend (Sat/Sun) — in 2025, it was December 6th/7th.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published in autumn 2026. The market has followed a proven structure for years:
