17 km hike with seven beer stops — through the Saarpfalz district on Ascension Day
The Homburg Beer Hike is an unusual success story: launched a few years ago by the Homburg Cultural Society in cooperation with the traditional Karlsberg Brewery, the event has become the largest hiking event in the southeast of Saarland. Over 4,000 hikers participated in 2025, with more than half completing the full route. The date is traditionally Ascension Day — the South German Father's Day, when Saarland traditionally sets off on men's hikes with handcarts.
The path leads from the TuS sports field in Wörschweiler on a marked trail in seven stages to the finish line:
Between the stages are six catering stops: five with draft beer, snacks, and live music, and one additional stop with non-alcoholic drinks, coffee, and sweets.
Karlsberg is the most important brewery in Saarland and comes directly from Homburg — the beer hike is therefore practically a home game. At all stops, Karlsberg Urpils and a special Karlsberg variant (seasonal variety changes) are offered at reduced prices. Those who prefer to hike non-alcoholic will find suitable alternatives at each stop — apple spritzer, water, lemonade, non-alcoholic beer.
Each stop features its own specialty:
At the starting point, each hiker receives a stamp card. Each stop provides a stamp — those who collect all seven can participate in the raffle at the finish. Grand prizes: Karlsberg product packages, cultural vouchers for Homburg cultural events, smaller prizes.
A free shuttle runs every 30 minutes from Homburg main train station to the start at Wörschweiler sports field. From the finish at the Schwarzenacker Roman Museum, the Biosphärenbus (Biosphere Bus) takes hikers back to Homburg, as does line R7. No registration required, participation is free.
The route largely passes through the Bliesgau UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — one of the most valuable cultural landscapes in Central Europe. Streams, orchards, beech forests, and recurring views of the Saarpfalz district make the trail a scenic highlight. Even those who don't like beer will enjoy one of Saarland's most beautiful routes.
Start from 9 a.m. at the TuS sports field in Wörschweiler, recommended start time between 10 and 11 a.m. The route is fully marked. Stamp cards are available at the start; seven stamps qualify for the raffle.
Participation is free. Beer €2–3 per token, food €4–8 depending on the stand. Stamp card is free.
By train: Homburg (Saar) station with ICE connections from Frankfurt, Mannheim, Saarbrücken. Free shuttle from the main station every 30 min. to the start in Wörschweiler. By car: A6 (Homburg exit), parking available at Wörschweiler sports field.
Participation in the hike is free. Beer tokens at the stops at reduced rates (typically €2–3 per beer). Food costs €4–8 depending on the stand.
Hike in stages — those who don't want to complete the full route can exit at any time and take the Biosphärenbus or R7 back. Don't forget your stamp card for the raffle at the finish!
