One of the largest hiking events in Saarland
The Homburg Beer Hike is an unusual success story: launched a few years ago by the Homburg Cultural Society in cooperation with the traditional Karlsberg Brewery, the event has become the largest hiking event in the southeast of Saarland. Over 4,000 hikers participated in 2025, with more than half completing the full route. The date is traditionally Ascension Day — the South German Father's Day, when Saarland traditionally sets off on men's hikes with handcarts.
The Route — 17 km through Saarpfalz
The path leads from the TuS sports field in Wörschweiler on a marked trail in seven stages to the finish line:
- Stage 1: Wörschweiler → Einöd
- Stage 2: Einöd → Einöder Höhe
- Stage 3: Einöder Höhe → Ernstweiler
- Stage 4: Ernstweiler → Dibeliushof
- Stage 5: Dibeliushof → Ski and Hiking Lodge Kirrberg
- Stage 6: Kirrberg → Übergangsstation
- Stage 7: Übergang → Schwarzenacker Roman Museum (Finish)
Between the stages are six catering stops: five with draft beer, snacks, and live music, and one additional stop with non-alcoholic drinks, coffee, and sweets.
The Beer — Karlsberg in its Homeland
Karlsberg is the most important brewery in Saarland and comes directly from Homburg — the beer hike is therefore practically a home game. At all stops, Karlsberg Urpils and a special Karlsberg variant (seasonal variety changes) are offered at reduced prices. Those who prefer to hike non-alcoholic will find suitable alternatives at each stop — apple spritzer, water, lemonade, non-alcoholic beer.
Culinary Full Program
Each stop features its own specialty:
- Classic Bratwurst (grilled sausage) and Saarland Schwenker (grilled meat skewers)
- Saumagen — the Palatinate specialty
- Crêpe stand for the sweet-toothed crowd
- At the finish in the Schwarzenacker Roman Museum: Lucanica sausages according to an original Roman recipe — a historical treat to conclude
The Stamp Card and Raffle
At the starting point, each hiker receives a stamp card. Each stop provides a stamp — those who collect all seven can participate in the raffle at the finish. Grand prizes: Karlsberg product packages, cultural vouchers for Homburg cultural events, smaller prizes.
Logistics and Return Journey
A free shuttle runs every 30 minutes from Homburg main train station to the start at Wörschweiler sports field. From the finish at the Schwarzenacker Roman Museum, the Biosphärenbus (Biosphere Bus) takes hikers back to Homburg, as does line R7. No registration required, participation is free.
Saarpfalz District and Bliesgau
The route largely passes through the Bliesgau UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — one of the most valuable cultural landscapes in Central Europe. Streams, orchards, beech forests, and recurring views of the Saarpfalz district make the trail a scenic highlight. Even those who don't like beer will enjoy one of Saarland's most beautiful routes.
