Reenactment of the historical wood court of 1734 at the Königstuhl Kroge-Ehrendorf, annually on the 1st Sunday in August
The Hölting is a historical wood court that, in the Oldenburger Münsterland region, decided on the use of common forests, wood rights, grazing rights, and disputes among community members since the Middle Ages. In the Kroge-Ehrendorf district of the town of Lohne (Oldenburg), such a Hölting is documented for the year 1734. Since 1994, the Heimatverein Kroge-Ehrendorf has revived this historical wood court annually at the Königstuhl — as a living customs event that makes history tangible.
The Königstuhl, a historical meeting place for the community members, still serves as the venue for the Hölting today. Wearing traditional costumes, using oral jurisdiction, and engaging in ritualized exchanges, members of the Heimatverein recreate the proceedings of a historical wood court. Jurors, wood bailiffs, and community members deliberate on fictional and real disputes concerning wood, forest, and pasture.
The Hölting is more than just a performance: Following the assembly, the day turns into a local festival with Low German music, a brass band, regional food, and drinks. Adults and children learn in a vivid way how joint decisions were made in the rural communities of the past and the importance of forest and wood for the livelihood of their ancestors.
For Kroge-Ehrendorf, the Hölting is a central element of local identity. It combines the preservation of customs, historical awareness, and communal experience. The Heimatverein thus not only engages in remembrance work but also strengthens the social cohesion within the community.
The Hölting is open to all interested parties. Admission is free; donations for the Heimatverein are welcome. Guests from the entire Oldenburger Münsterland region and beyond experience a historical custom that is still practiced in only a few places in Lower Saxony.
The 2026 edition of the Hölting Kroge-Ehrendorf follows the proven format of the historical wood court reenactment. The venue is again the Königstuhl, the historically documented meeting place of the community members. The reading of historical documents, the symbolic opening of the assembly, and the deliberation of typical wood-related issues form the dramatic core.
Afterwards, the Königstuhl transforms into a festival ground with catering. Low German songs, brass band music, and regional dishes create the atmosphere of a traditional local festival in the Oldenburger Münsterland.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Heimatverein in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
