Three-day summer festival on the fairground in the Hitdorf district of Rhineland — Free admission
Anyone who associates Leverkusen solely with the Bayer plant and the motorway junction doesn't know Hitdorf. The southernmost district of the city — the smallest with just under 4,000 inhabitants — is located directly on the Rhine opposite the Düsseldorf district of Hassel. Until 1930, Hitdorf was an independent Rhenish municipality, with its own traditions, its own harbour, and its own village centre. This history is still evident in the architecture today: narrow streets, half-timbered houses, a promenade along the Rhine wall, a ferry across the Rhine. In the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hitdorf is considered a hidden gem for Rhenish atmosphere close to the big city.
The HitDORFFEST is organised by the civic association Leben in Hitdorf e.V. (LiH) — a local engagement network that has been actively enlivening the district with events for years: Frühschoppen, Carnival, May Festival, Advent Market, and in summer, the HitDORFFEST. The venue is the Kirmesplatz (fairground) on Hitdorfer Straße — the central square of the district, traditionally used for folk festivals (Volksfeste).
The festival's concept is deliberately small and friendly: three days of live music under the open sky, food trucks and snack stands with Rhenish specialities (Reibekuchen, Kölsch, fries), seating areas under umbrellas, free admission. It's not a mega-event with supra-regional ambitions, but a neighbourhood summer festival: regulars meet each other, neighbours meet neighbours, families from surrounding districts stop by. The musical mix ranges from cover bands and local singer/songwriters to Rhenish-Carnival acts.
The event is part of a broader strategy by the civic association to liven up the district and protect it against the tendency of urban peripheries where identity loss flows to the city centre. With events like the HitDORFFEST, Hitdorf actively takes steps to preserve its special character — and with success: the district attracts families who are explicitly looking for village life on the Rhine.
Anyone who comes for the festival weekend benefits from its special location: a walk along the Rhine promenade before or after the festival is part of the programme. The Hitdorf ferry runs regularly across the Rhine in summer; an excursion to Düsseldorf-Hassel or a walk in the neighbouring nature reserve can be easily combined with the festival.
