Three Days of Medieval Magic around the Parish Church in the Rottal Valley
The Historical Market Festival Rotthalmünster is one of the most charming summer events in the Rottal Valley, located in the southern district of Passau in the state of Bavaria. The festival originated in 2003 when the market town of Rotthalmünster celebrated its 1,250th anniversary. What began as a unique jubilee event has become a recurring festival that attracts local residents as well as guests from all over the Lower Bavaria region.
The venue is the church square surrounding the distinctive parish church of Rotthalmünster. For three days, camp groups, artisans, and artists transform the historic town center into a lively stage. Visitors can experience, among other things:
What makes the market festival particularly special is its unique historical ambiance: the tightly packed buildings of the old market center, the baroque parish church, and the church square illuminated by torches and fire create an atmosphere that transports visitors to another era. Rustic stalls offering hearty food and regional drinks cater to the physical well-being of attendees.
The market town of Rotthalmünster is situated in the fertile Rottal Valley, a landscape characterized by rolling hills and farms on the border between Lower Bavaria and the Inn Valley. Its proximity to Passau and the Austrian border makes the market festival a worthwhile excursion destination for a summer weekend visit to the region.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition of the Historical Market Festival: for three days, the church square of Rotthalmünster becomes a vibrant historical stage. Camp groups set up their tents, artisans demonstrate old techniques, and fire shows provide atmospheric highlights in the evening. The exact date in summer 2026 will be announced by the market town of Rotthalmünster.
As in previous years, the festival is open to all visitors and is aimed at families as well as enthusiasts of historical events from the entire Passau district.
Three festival days featuring: juggling and jesters' artistry, magic, fire shows at dusk, axe and archery, medieval camp life, and rustic catering around the parish church.
