About Schrappelmarkt

The Schrappelmarkt is one of the oldest and most original traditional markets in Saxony-Anhalt. Every year, two weekends before Totensonntag (Sunday of the Dead), the city center of the 1,200-soul municipality of Schraplau in Saalekreis transforms into a lively flea and market fair with a festival tent, local history museum, and unique club life. The proceeds have always benefited social causes.

Schraplau's Oldest Market β€” Since the 16th Century

When November shrouds the south of the Saalekreis district in fog and daylight dwindles, the tiny town of Schraplau in Saxony-Anhalt has its grand moment. With just around 1,200 inhabitants, the town lives by its oldest tradition once a year for a weekend: the Schrappelmarkt. Schraplau received its market rights as early as 1500 in an exchange with Osterhausen β€” and while other historical markets in the area have long since disappeared, the Schrappelmarkt has not only survived but has also developed into a crowd-puller far beyond the region.

Flea Market, Wares, and Festival Tent Atmosphere

The Schrappelmarkt is a classic flea and market fair: not a curated artisan event, but a real, honest market with a wide range of offerings β€” from handmade items and bargains to quirky finds. What makes the market special is the close integration with club life. Numerous Schraplau clubs β€” especially the Schraplauer Carneval Club 1981 e.V. β€” are actively involved at the stalls and in the festival tent. The proceeds flow back into club activities and social institutions in the town. This makes the market a place where every beer, every mulled wine, and every souvenir purchased tastes twice as good.

The Festival Tent β€” Heart of the Weekend

The center of activity is the festival tent in the town center. Here, the carnival club ensures a lively atmosphere until late at night β€” with dance music, regional food, and the relaxed conviviality typical of Schraplau. Those who want to experience Saxony-Anhalt beyond the UNESCO strongholds will find an atmosphere here that is rarely described in guidebooks: village-like, warm, with a long history, and without marketing gloss.

Town Museum Open on Market Weekend

On both market days, the Town Museum opens its doors β€” an ideal opportunity to learn more about Schraplau's centuries-old market rights history, the region's salt production past, and the local club culture. Admission is traditionally inexpensive or free.

When Exactly? The Date Follows the Church Year

Unlike most folk festivals, the Schrappelmarkt does not have a fixed calendar date. It always takes place two weekends before Totensonntag β€” that Protestant day of remembrance that concludes the church year. For 2026, this means: probably the weekend of November 7th to 8th, 2026.

A Piece of Saxony-Anhalt You Won't Find Elsewhere

In a region culturally dominated by heavyweights like Halle, Naumburg, or Wittenberg, the Schrappelmarkt asserts itself with its quiet persistence. Anyone who has visited the market once understands why the people of Schraplau cherish it so devotedly: it is identity, club life, and local history condensed into one weekend β€” a folk festival in the most original sense of the word.

Schrappelmarkt — edition 2026

Expected on the weekend of November 7 to 8, 2026, Schraplau once again invites you to the Schrappelmarkt. The date follows the centuries-old tradition: two weekends before Totensonntag. Flea market, festival tent with the carnival club, and the open local history museum characterize the weekend.

The 2026 Schrappelmarkt is expected to take place on the weekend of November 7–8, 2026 β€” Totensonntag falls on November 22, 2026, and the market always takes place two weeks prior. The final confirmation, along with a detailed program, will traditionally be published by the Schraplauer Carneval Club and the city administration in late summer.

The proven format is expected again: flea and market stalls in the city center, a festival tent with evening dance music, an open local history museum, and culinary classics β€” from bratwurst and mulled wine to regional specialties.
