More than 30 years of tradition — Advent market in historical attire around St. Michaelis Church
The Historic Christmas Market originated more than thirty years ago as a counter-proposal to the increasingly commercial large markets. The goal from the outset was to establish a small, high-quality market at one of Lüneburg's most historically significant locations — around the predominantly Romanesque St. Michaelis Church — focusing on craftsmanship, tradition, and conviviality. The market is organized exclusively on a voluntary basis by the Lüneburg Old Town Working Group (ALA). The proceeds flow entirely into the maintenance and restoration of historical buildings in the western quarter and throughout Lüneburg's old town.
The stallholders wear historically inspired costumes, and many stalls are decorated with wood and natural materials. The offerings range from pottery, hand-forged ironwork, candles, leather goods, honey, and mead to knitted and textile items, as well as culinary delights — roasted almonds, hot apple punch, mulled wine, soups, and bratwurst from regional producers. A selection of stallholders demonstrates traditional craft techniques: spinning, felting, blacksmithing, pottery, or basket weaving.
St. Michaelis Church, one of Lüneburg's three major brick churches, forms the backdrop for the market. Built in the 14th century as a monastery church, it was part of a Benedictine monastery until the Reformation — Johann Sebastian Bach attended the Michaelis School here as a choir student. During market days, the church is open to visitors, with Advent music and contemplative moments complementing the secular market activities. The western quarter around the church, with its patrician houses, the former horse fountain, and narrow alleys, is one of the most beautiful corners of the entire old town.
All proceeds from the market go towards the renovation of historical buildings. The ALA has co-financed numerous restoration projects over the past decades. Thus, the market is not only an Advent experience but also a contribution to the preservation of Lüneburg's old town, a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.
For years, the Historic Christmas Market has been one of the insider tips of the Northern German Advent calendar. Those who leave the large Lüneburg market at the town hall and wander through the narrow alleys to the western quarter will find an atmosphere deliberately counter to the hustle and bustle of the big markets. Wooden stalls, natural decorations, subdued lighting, Advent carols from St. Michaelis, and the scent of wood fires and mulled wine shape the mood. In 2026, the first Advent falls on December 6th — the concept of the market on the first Advent weekend remains the same.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published by the Lüneburg Old Town Working Group in the autumn. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
