Advent Magic in Historical Costume
The Historic Christmas Market Erlangen is part of the Erlangen Winter Magic and is one of the city's most distinctive Advent markets. While other markets are modern or classic, the market at Neustädter Kirchenplatz consistently focuses on a medieval appearance: wooden stalls, historically dressed merchants, and a program that transports visitors back to past times.
Venue: Neustädter Kirchenplatz
The venue is the square around the baroque Neustädter Kirche in the center of Erlangen. The compact setting, framed by historic buildings, gives the market an intimate, almost enclosed atmosphere, clearly distinguishing it from the larger squares in the city center.
Juggling and Traditions
The program is brought to life by traveling artists: jugglers, stilt walkers, jongleurs, fire eaters, and musicians perform daily, reviving old traditions. This staging makes the market a special experience, particularly for families, and sets it apart from purely commercial Christmas markets.
Culinary Delights and Crafts
Culinary offerings are dominated by regional Advent classics — mulled wine, Franconian gingerbread, hearty market fare — complemented by historically inspired specialties. The stalls offer crafts, artisanal goods, and seasonal wares, inviting visitors to stroll and find gifts.
Erlangen and the Winter Magic
Erlangen, a university city in the Middle Franconian part of Bavaria, bundles its Advent markets under the umbrella of the Erlangen Winter Magic. The Historic Christmas Market at Neustädter Kirchenplatz is the most thematically unique offering within this and a fixed date in the region's event calendar.
