Annual festival of the Burschenverein Immergrün Schondra for the Feast of the Sacred Heart
The Herz-Jesu-Fest in Schondra is a Catholic festival of traditions in the market town of Schondra, a municipality with around 1,700 inhabitants in the Bad Kissingen district of Lower Franconia. The event is organized by the Katholischer Burschenverein Immergrün Schondra, founded in 1913 – one of the oldest youth associations in the region. The festival is the highlight of the association's year and combines liturgical celebration with social festivities.
The Feast of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic feast day celebrated annually three weeks after Pentecost – specifically, on the third Friday after Pentecost. It is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and is particularly celebrated in the traditional customs of Southern Germany, Austria, and Tyrol. In Schondra, it serves as both the patronal festival and the association's festival.
The festival evening traditionally begins with a festive church service in the Schondra parish church at 6:30 PM. Afterwards, members of the association and the community gather and proceed to the parish hall or festival grounds for a barbecue featuring Franconian specialties, drinks, and musical accompaniment. The 'Burschen' (young men) serve the guests, while families and community members mingle and socialize.
The market town of Schondra is located in the Sinngrund region on the edge of the Rhön mountains in the state of Bavaria. By preserving the Herz-Jesu-Fest, the Burschenverein Immergrün embodies an important element of Southern German Catholic association culture, which remains vibrant in the rural communities of the Bad Kissingen district to this day.
