Freiburg district festival celebrating "30 Years of the Youth Forum" in one of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in Breisgau
The district of Herdern is located north of Freiburg's old town, between the university and the Dreisam river. It's a classic Gründerzeit district with villas, gardens, wide avenues, and small squares. Home to around 11,000 residents, it's popular with families, academics, senior students, and the elderly. This is where Freiburg's bourgeoisie lives, where the oldest district associations are active, and where the district festival takes place, bringing the neighbourhood together once a year.
The 2026 anniversary is the icing on the cake: The Jugendforum Herdern e.V. celebrates 30 years of open child and youth work in Freiburg-Herdern. Since 1996, the association has operated a meeting point for children and young people, organising holiday programmes, workshops, excursions, and cultural events — and it is a pillar of the district. Three decades of volunteer commitment are paying off: Generations of Herdern children have grown up here.
The festival starts at 1 PM — a relaxed beginning in the early afternoon. Setup takes place in the morning, with an opening address by the Bürgerverein and representatives of the City of Freiburg. The programme runs until 10 PM — nine hours of district atmosphere.
The Bürgerverein Herdern is Freiburg's oldest district association and has been the mouthpiece and organisational centre of the neighbourhood for generations. From traffic issues to cultural events, from the Advent market to the district festival: the Bürgerverein brings residents, the city, and associations together. For the district festival, it is responsible for the main stage, the catering stands, and coordination with the City of Freiburg.
The university city of Freiburg im Breisgau (AGS 08311) is the fourth-largest city in Baden-Württemberg with around 230,000 inhabitants and the gateway to the southern Black Forest. Known as the Sun City (Germany's sunniest city), an eco-capital with a tradition of solar energy and sustainability, and a university location (Albert Ludwig University, founded 1457). The Bächle (small water channels) in the old town alleys, the Münster (cathedral), the Schlossberg (castle hill), and the nearby Schauinsland mountain shape the cityscape. Herdern is one of the most vibrant and attractive districts away from the tourist routes of the old town.
If you want to experience Freiburg beyond the tourist routes, the Herdern District Festival is the place to be. A genuine neighbourhood festival, with children and seniors, students and professors, artists and craftspeople. The 2026 anniversary edition is a special date — three decades of the Jugendforum are a remarkable volunteer achievement that deserves recognition.
The 2026 edition has a special occasion: The Jugendforum Herdern celebrates its 30th anniversary. Three decades of open child and youth work will be honoured at the district festival with short speeches, commemorative activities, and programme highlights. A classic district festival day with a family programme until 6 PM and a concert/socialising block until 10 PM.
