Three Days of Advent in the City Center

The Herdecker Weihnachtszauber is the traditional Advent market of the town of Herdecke — compactly concentrated into three days on the first Advent weekend, yet rich in programming. From November 27th to 29th, 2026, the city center between Viehmarktbrunnen and Kampsträter Platz will become a Christmas stage. The event is organized by the Herdecker Heimat- und Verkehrsverein e.V. in cooperation with the Werbegemeinschaft Herdecke and the municipal office for economic development, city marketing, and tourism.

Stalls, Huts, and Mulled Wine

At the market, you'll find what makes a good small-town Advent market: mulled wine and punch in lovingly decorated huts, regional specialties like bratwurst, potato pancakes, candied almonds, crêpes, and waffles, as well as arts and crafts and Christmas decorations from local exhibitors. The assortment is manageable — Herdecke is a small town with 22,000 inhabitants — but that's precisely its charm: no mass-produced industrial goods, but hand-picked products from the region.

Sunday Opening Hours

On Sunday, November 29th, 2026, the shops in Herdecke's city center will also be open from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. This allows you to combine your visit to the Christmas market with a relaxed stroll through town — boutiques, bookstores, and gift shops await visitors alongside the market activities.

Program and Accompanying Events

The market is accompanied by live music and entertainment: choir performances, children's programs, brass bands, and small stage moments that set the rhythm for the weekend. The exact program will be announced shortly before the market — typically with an opening on Friday evening and family activities on Sunday.

Herdecke on the Hengsteysee

Herdecke is located on the southeastern edge of the Ruhr area, nestled between the reservoirs of the Volme and the Hengsteysee, on the border between the Ruhr area and the Sauerland region. The historic city center with its distinctive Hexenturm (Witches' Tower), the Stiftsplatz, and the Hauptstraße offers an attractive backdrop for the Advent market. Herdecke is well-connected by public transport to Hagen, Dortmund, and Witten — and is a short walk from the Hengsteysee, which can be visited in winter during Advent.
