Traditional market in the Hagen district with an open Sunday
Hohenlimburg is one of the most distinctive districts of Hagen, located south of the city center at the entrance to the Sauerland region. Schloss Hohenlimburg, the last inhabited hilltop castle in Westphalia, towers over the district. When the Herbstmarkt arrives in September, the market square and the adjoining shopping streets transform into a vibrant market quarter.
The Hohenlimburg Herbstmarkt follows the typical tradition of Westphalian town district markets: Fairground operators and market vendors set up their stalls in the Marktplatz, Freiheitstraße, and Gaußstraße. The assortment includes household goods, textiles, regional food products, sweets, snack stands, and small rides for children. The market is more of a district market than a large event – which makes it relaxed, family-oriented, and easy to walk around.
The highlight is the verkaufsoffener Sonntag (open Sunday): On this day, local shops open their doors outside of the regular Sunday regulations in North Rhine-Westphalia. This brings life to the district and provides a special platform for retailers who are otherwise mainly served during the week.
The market is located in the south of Hagen, on the border between the Ruhr area and the Sauerland. A visit can be combined with exploring the district: Hohenlimburg Castle, hiking trails in the Lennegebirge mountains, the historic townscape with half-timbered houses along the Lenne. In autumn, the region shows its most beautiful colors – ideal for a day trip to the market and the castle.
The market is organized by the Werbegemeinschaft Hohenlimburg e.V., an association of local retailers, restaurateurs, and service providers. The Werbegemeinschaft also organizes the Hohenlimburg Spring Market and other events that support district life.
The Herbstmarkt is a classic weekend event: The town center is bustling with market activity on Saturday and Sunday. Free admission. There are carousels and small stalls for children, and market bustle and retail for adults. If you're expecting a mulled wine market atmosphere, this isn't it – it's a classic late-summer market, not an Advent market.
In 2026, the Herbstmarkt will open its stalls in the center of Hagen-Hohenlimburg on the weekend of September 26–27. Classic market assortment, food, regional vendors, fairground rides. On Sunday, the shops will also open as part of the open Sunday.
Free admission.
