Klönschnack, barbecue and lantern procession for children — the village autumn festival in Schnakenbek
The Herbstfest der Feuerwehr Schnakenbek is not a major tourist event — it is an honest, well-organized village festival supported by the Freiwillige Feuerwehr (Volunteer Fire Brigade) Schnakenbek. The focus is on three elements: Klönschnack (the Northern German word for relaxed get-together), barbecue evening with sausages and steaks from the fire brigade grill, and a lantern procession for children, which starts a little later in the evening.
In rural communities like Schnakenbek, the Freiwillige Feuerwehr is more than just an emergency organization — it is often the most important community club in the village. Fire brigade festivals, open days, anniversary events, and activities like the Herbstfest are central occasions where village life becomes visible. The Herbstfest fulfills this community-building function with Klönschnack, barbecue, and children's activities.
The highlight of the evening — especially for families with small children — is the lantern procession. Children bring their own handmade lanterns, meet at the fire station, walk through the village together, sing traditional lantern songs, and return to the festival grounds. A small but emotionally powerful tradition that is repeated annually.
Schnakenbek is a small community with just under 700 inhabitants in the Amt Lauenburgische Seen district, in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, southeast of Hamburg. The village is located on a Geesthöhe (geest elevation) and is surrounded by forests and fields. The Freiwillige Feuerwehr is one of the central clubs — the Herbstfest is one of its most important annual events.
Anyone who thinks that only large festivals deserve an entry in a festival database overlooks the value of such events for rural Schleswig-Holstein. The Herbstfest in Schnakenbek is an expression of vibrant village culture — and it is precisely this type of local tradition that we want to make visible here.
The Herbstfest is confirmed on the official event page of the Schnakenbek municipality. As every year, it starts at 6 p.m. and the lantern procession takes place after dark.
The organizer is the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Schnakenbek. The festival is a classic community-building village format, supported by volunteer work and neighborly help.
