Alternative Winter Market in the Artist Village on the Spree Riverbank in Friedrichshain
The Holzmarkt, located between Jannowitzbrücke and Ostbahnhof, is one of the most distinctive Berlin projects of the last decade: a cooperatively managed area of wooden structures, a garden, concert venues, and a trailer colony directly on the Friedrichshain Spree riverbank. The site is in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, Friedrichshain locality. Between mid-November and the end of December, Holzmarkt transforms into "Heissa Holzmarkt" – a winter market that continues the artist village concept.
Instead of industrially produced mulled wine stalls, the Holzmarkt exhibitors focus on artisanal and handmade goods: soaps, designer jewelry, pottery, ceramics, photographs, and small fashion labels. On the culinary side, the spectrum is international: Hungarian Lángos, Mexican burritos, Swabian Käsespätzle, Japanese ramen, along with mulled wine, punch, and baked goods. The idea is clear: move away from the standard market towards a curated selection that an artist village can afford.
For families, Heissa Holzmarkt is one of Berlin's warmer winter markets – literally. An indoor playground, bouncy castle, circus workshops, cookie baking, storytellers, and small theater performances fill the weekend afternoons. Instead of grumpy carousels, hands-on workshops led by Holzmarkt residents take center stage.
Heissa Holzmarkt uses a two-tiered admission system: Wednesdays and Thursdays, the market is free; Fridays to Sundays, a solidarity contribution of around €3 is charged. This serves two purposes: to spread out visitors on weekends (keeping the narrow wooden paths passable) and to partially cross-subsidize stand rents. Those seeking a calm atmosphere should come during the week.
Heissa Holzmarkt 2026 will continue the successful format: approximately six weeks of winter market in the artist village on the Spree riverbank in Friedrichshain, with tiered admission (free on Wednesdays/Thursdays, solidarity contribution on weekends), curated crafts, international gastronomy, and a children's program. Specific dates and the full 2026 program are expected to be published by the Holzmarkt team in late autumn on holzmarkt.com.
For planning purposes: the market ran from November 14 to December 21 in 2025 – a similar timeframe can be expected for 2026. The venue remains the entire Holzmarkt 25 area on Holzmarktstraße, directly between Jannowitzbrücke and Ostbahnhof.
Dates, opening hours, and the daily program for 2026 will be published on holzmarkt.com/kalender. Signing up for the newsletter via the website is recommended.
S-Bahn lines S3/S5/S7/S9 or regional trains to S Jannowitzbrücke (east edge of the site) or S Ostbahnhof (west edge). U-Bahn U8 to Jannowitzbrücke. Buses 147, 142, 300 nearby. Cycle directly onto the premises.
Wednesday and Thursday: free. Friday to Sunday: approx. €3 solidarity contribution (at the box office). Current rates at holzmarkt.com.
Warm clothing – the site is right on the water, with wind from the Spree. Cash is always helpful; some stalls accept cards, others don't.
