Heinzels Wintermärchen — Cologne Tradition with its Own Concept

Heinzels Wintermärchen is Cologne's Christmas market with a distinct identity. While other major markets (Dom Cathedral Christmas Market, Engel Market at Neumarkt, Harbour Christmas Market at the Chocolate Museum) each have a thematic focus, Heinzels Wintermärchen combines two squares — Alter Markt and Heumarkt — integrating ice skating, craftsmanship, children's activities, and gastronomy into a cohesive market experience. The organiser, Heinzel GmbH, takes its name from the Heinzelmännchen from August Kopisch's 1836 poem — the legendary Cologne helper gnomes who secretly did the work of craftsmen at night.

Over 100 Metres of Ice Rink at Heumarkt

The centrepiece is the ice rink at Heumarkt: over 100 metres long, with a view of the famous equestrian statue — one of the largest outdoor ice rinks in a German city centre. Admission and skate rental can be purchased online at heinzels-wintermaerchen.de or on-site. There is also an ice stock sport rink for team games — booking is recommended, as it is often fully booked in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Over 100 Stalls with Craftsmen's Alley at Alter Markt

The Handwerker-Gasse (Craftsmen's Alley) gathers on Alter Markt — over 100 market stalls featuring genuine craftspeople in historical costumes: woodcarvers, blacksmiths, bakers, glassblowers, leatherworkers. Here, visitors can watch the craftspeople at work and purchase unique gifts directly from the stalls — a deliberate alternative to the mass-produced industrial souvenirs found at many other Christmas markets.

Programme — Live Music, Ice Disco, Walking Acts

The programme includes live music, a Silent Ice Disco, street performers, and various acts. Children's activities include bonbon making, horseshoe forging, ice skating lessons, carousels, and a Ferris wheel. Gastronomy features typical Cologne traditions: strudel, waffles, traditional bread, mulled wine (with a Cologne twist), potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), and spit-roasted pork (Spießbraten).

Opening Hours and Dates

Open daily 11:00 AM–10:00 PM (until 30 Dec), from 11:00 AM–9:00 PM on 31 Dec and 1 Jan; closed on 24 and 25 December. Alter Markt closes after 23 December; the ice rink at Heumarkt remains open until 10 January 2027.

Sustainability

The organisers pursue an environmentally conscious approach: "Avoid, Reduce, Compensate" — focusing on the carbon footprint, using reusable cups for mulled wine, sourcing from regional suppliers, and avoiding unnecessary packaging.
