Bavarian Costume and Folk Dance Culture at the Foot of the Zugspitze
The Zugspitze village of Grainau is located at the foot of the Zugspitze in the Werdenfelser Land region, in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen (state of Bavaria, 09180). A particularly strong tradition of costumes and folk dancing has been preserved here — and the folk costume association »D'Höllentaler Grainau« is its most important custodian in the village. The association, named after the Höllental valley at the foot of the Zugspitze's north face, has been nurturing the Schuhplattler, yodeling, and folk dance traditions of the Upper Bavarian highlands for generations.
The venue is the music pavilion in Grainau's spa park — a classic Bavarian pavilion stage, with open-air seating for the audience. In case of bad weather, the event will be moved to an indoor hall. The atmosphere is cozy, almost familial — not a tourist show, but a genuine club evening where guests are warmly welcomed.
The program follows traditional folk dance evenings of the Werdenfelser Land: Schuhplattler in several variations, ribbon dances, old pieces from the regional repertoire, yodeling performances, Goasslschnalzen (cracking the large whip), and folk songs. The Grainau music band and other local music groups provide accompaniment — the Schuhplattler dancers wear traditional Werdenfelser costumes.
During the evening, freshly tapped beer is served, along with Bavarian grilled specialties — bratwurst, grilled fish on a stick, and sauerkraut salad. Free admission with the Grainau guest card, making the evening one of the most popular events for guests in the Zugspitze village. Suitable for families, starting in the early evening, lasting about four hours.
On Saturday, June 13, 2026, the folk costume association »D'Höllentaler Grainau« invites you again to the Heimatabend in the Grainau Music Pavilion.
