City festival with Sunday shopping and spring funfair — City centre car-free on Mother's Day Sunday
On Sunday, May 10, 2026 (Mother's Day Sunday), Heiligenhaus invites you to the annual Spring Festival. From 12 PM to 6 PM, the city centre will be closed to traffic and become a city festival area with clear thematic focus areas: crafts, mobility, environment, reading, and a family programme. The concept goes beyond a classic city festival — it is a curated event with an educational and engagement mission.
The programme is divided into four content-focused areas that will take place in different squares and streets in Heiligenhaus city centre:
The business association has applied for a Sunday shopping event from 1 PM to 6 PM with spring offers in Heiligenhaus shops — boutiques, bakeries, gift shops, and cafés will open for the spring shopping season. The programme is complemented by a spring funfair on Kirchplatz with carousels, food stalls, and amusement rides — the classic folk festival element of the Spring Festival.
In addition to the thematic areas, an entertainment programme will create a festive atmosphere:
The city of Heiligenhaus, with its approximately 26,000 inhabitants, is located in the western District of Mettmann, between Velbert and Ratingen — south of Essen and west of Düsseldorf. Characterised by the lock industry (Heiligenhaus is one of Germany's leading lock and hardware production sites; brands like ABUS and Carl Fuhr come from the region), the city combines industrial character with the nearby Bergisch-Bergisches Land region. Worth seeing are the Kompressorenhaus Schloss Hugenpoet (although in Essen, it's right next door), the Düsseltal hiking trails, and the Heiligenhaus city centre itself — the stage for the Spring Festival.
The District of Mettmann includes Velbert, Ratingen, Mettmann, Erkrath, Hilden, Langenfeld, Monheim, Wülfrath, and Haan, in addition to Heiligenhaus — it has Germany's most densely populated district population (over 480,000 inhabitants) despite its relatively small area. Characteristic is the mix of Rhenish-Bergish transitional mentality, dense industrial concentration, and an above-average number of city and district festivals. The Heiligenhaus Spring Festival is one of the well-established spring city festivals in the region.
The Heiligenhaus Spring Festival 2026 combines a classic city festival with thematic focus areas on crafts, mobility, environment, and reading. The city centre will be car-free, the Sunday shopping event will bring shops open for Sunday shopping, and the spring funfair on Kirchplatz will provide the classic folk festival element.
Free admission. Food, drinks, flea market purchases, and funfair rides at usual market prices.
By public transport: Bus line 750 or 783 from Velbert or Ratingen. By car: A44 Essen-Düsseldorf, exit Heiligenhaus, then to the city centre. On the Spring Festival Sunday, the city centre is closed to traffic — park in the surrounding streets or at the Bürgerhaus.
Free admission. Food, drinks, flea market purchases, and funfair rides at usual market prices.
For families, the early afternoon is worthwhile (children's programme) — it gets busier around 4 PM. The book and vinyl flea market in Forum Hitzbleck is a insider tip for collectors — arrive as early as possible, the best items go quickly. On the town hall square, you can experience crafts live — interesting for young people considering career choices.
