International Festival Dedicated to the Art of the Lied
The Heidelberger Frühling Liedfestival is a satellite festival of the renowned Heidelberger Frühling Music Festival and is dedicated exclusively to the art of the Lied. The 5th edition will take place in 2026 – a still young, but rapidly internationally established festival that has made Heidelberg one of Europe's most important addresses for Lied art.
The Heidelberger Frühling Music Festival was founded in 1997 and is now one of Germany's most significant classical festivals. Over the years, several satellite formats have emerged from the main festival in spring:
The Liedfestival utilizes the historic and architecturally impressive venues of the university city: the reopened Stadthalle Heidelberg, the Alte Aula of Ruprecht Karl University, and smaller halls and studios. The venues are deliberately kept small – Lied art thrives on the proximity between artists and audience.
The festival programs a mix of established singers from the Lied scene, emerging young voices, and regular piano partners. The focus is on the classical German-language Lied (Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, Strauss), French mélodie, English and Nordic Lied traditions, as well as contemporary song cycles. The exact program details will be announced in the autumn before the festival.
In addition to concerts, masterclasses and workshop concerts are an integral part of the Liedfestival. Young singers have the opportunity to work with established artists – some of these sessions are open to the public as concert formats, offering insights into the workshop of Lied interpretation.
Heidelberg is one of Germany's most beautiful university cities – with its castle, Neckar bridge, old town, and Philosopher's Walk. The Liedfestival takes place in the lovely month of June, when students are still in town, the cafés are open outdoors, and the days are long. It's the perfect occasion to combine classical music with city culture.
The Heidelberger Frühling Liedfestival 2026 runs from June 13 to 20, 2026, celebrating its 5th edition. The festival is organized by Heidelberger Frühling gGmbH as a satellite of the renowned Heidelberger Frühling Music Festival.
Planned are Lied recitals with established international singers and their regular piano partners, plus masterclasses, workshop concerts, and artist talks. Venues include the Stadthalle Heidelberg, the Alte Aula of the University, and smaller concert halls in the Old Town. The detailed program will be announced in the autumn of 2025.
