Aachen — University City in the Three-Country Region
Aachen, with around 250,000 inhabitants, is Germany's southwesternmost major city, located in the three-country region of Belgium-Netherlands-Germany. Characterised by the RWTH Aachen (one of Europe's most important technical universities), the FH Aachen, the Cathedral (World Heritage Site, coronation place of Roman-German kings), the historic old town, and an international student population of around 25%. This mix of university city, historical heritage, and three-country location makes Aachen an unusually vibrant festival and event venue.
The Studentendorf as a Festival Area
The Studentendorf Aachen at Eckertweg 20 is one of the largest student housing complexes in North Rhine-Westphalia — nestled in a green environment in southern Aachen, with spacious green areas, courtyards, and outdoor spaces ideal for open-air events. The Sommerfestival uses this area as a naturally grown festival stage — not an industrial open-air meadow, but an urban university quarter that becomes a dance floor once a year.
"By Students for Students" — The Concept
The Sommerfestival is organised by student organisers, partly financed by sponsors and ticket sales. Character: accessible, young, dense, with the ambition of a full-fledged festival (two stages, awareness, catering) at a student-friendly admission price (€5 early bird). Target audience: the Aachen student scene, supplemented by visitors from the surrounding Dutch and Belgian university towns of Maastricht, Liège, Hasselt.
Programme 2026 — Two Stages, Many Genres
Main Stage — Party Hits, Pop, House
The Main Stage presents the main programme with mainstream-compatible acts: Fabiasco (Producer/DJ), Kleinstadtatzen (Cover/Party Band), Grenzland Records (Aachen record label with live act), DENBLUE, and Elixier. Expected: Cover hits, disco classics, German-language pop, House mainstream — the soundscape for the largest dance floor.
Forest Stage — Techno and Underground
The Forest Stage delves deeper into the electronic underground: LSG, MAIKIBOY, Break and Flow, MARIOMARIO. Expected: Techno, Tech-House, Deep House, with a slightly club-like character that distinguishes it from the pop mainstream of the Main Stage. The Forest Stage is often frequented by dedicated dancers.
"More coming soon" — further acts will be announced at sommerfestival.ac.

Getting There and Connections

Aachen as a Festival Companion
Anyone wanting to experience the weekend in Aachen's student milieu should combine the festival with exploring Aachen: Aachen Cathedral and Treasury, Couven Museum, Carolus Thermen (thermal baths in the city centre), Lousberg as a city hill with a view. On the RWTH side: the main campus with the Audimax and the Templergraben. With the student rhythm of this city in the background, the Sommerfestival becomes the logical consequence of a city that breathes student life.
