Open-air musical Robin Hood against the historic backdrop of Philippsburg Castle in Braubach
The Burgspiele Braubach are an example of how ambitious open-air theatre can shape a small town. For years, the Verein zur Kulturpflege Mittelrhein has been staging musicals, plays, and musical theatre against the backdrop of Philippsburg Castle – the striking Renaissance castle in the heart of Braubach's old town, which once housed the administration of the Lordship of Braubach.
The 2026 season is dedicated to a classic subject in theatre history: Robin Hood. The outlaw from Sherwood Forest, who takes from the rich and gives to the poor, is presented in a new musical adaptation. The combination of a medieval subject and a Renaissance backdrop is atmospherically perfect – Philippsburg Castle offers a historical depth as a setting that few open-air stages can match.
A total of three productions are planned for the 2026 season. The premiere is on June 12, 2026, with performances running throughout the summer.
The Burgspiele ensemble typically combines professionals from the independent theatre scene with ambitious amateur actors. Live music, elaborate costumes, and professional direction make the Burgspiele a serious cultural event that receives attention far beyond the region.
Reports from the local press indicate that AI tools were also used in the creative process for storyboarding and concept design – an aspect that makes the production one of the most contemporaneously multi-layered in the recent history of Burgspiele.
The 2026 season marks a special occasion: with Robin Hood, the ensemble tackles a world-famous subject that creates a strong visual impact against the backdrop of Philippsburg Castle. The Verein zur Kulturpflege Mittelrhein once again brings together professionals and dedicated amateurs for the production.
