Traditional Kirchweih in a Lower Bavarian Inn
The Hauskirta – also called Wirtshaus-Kirchweih or Kirta im Wirtshaus – is a still-living tradition in Lower and Upper Bavaria. Unlike large public Kirchweih festivals with marquees and amusement rides, the Hauskirta takes place in a classic inn, thus preserving the true character of the Kirchweih as a familial-village festival. In Neufraunhofen, a municipality in the Lower Bavarian district of Landshut, this tradition lives on.
The venue for the Neufraunhofen Hauskirta is the Gasthof Rampl – a traditional village inn that has been a meeting point for residents and a destination for festivities for generations. For the Kirchweih, the tables are set particularly festively, the innkeepers serve their best specialties, and beer from regional breweries flows from the wooden barrel. The warm, hospitable atmosphere of the inn creates the characteristic setting for the event.
Culinary-wise, the Hauskirta follows a clear Lower Bavarian tradition: roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, Schäuferla, suckling pig, homemade sausages, with sweet Krapfen (doughnuts) or Hefeteilchen (yeast pastries) for dessert. The innkeepers traditionally cook themselves – that's the appeal. Sometimes, typical Kirchweih specialties like the Lower Bavarian Kirtahendl (roast chicken) are also offered.
The municipality of Neufraunhofen is located in the south of the district of Landshut in the state of Bavaria, in the Vilstaler region between Vilsbiburg and Velden. With around 1,000 inhabitants, Neufraunhofen is one of the smaller municipalities in Lower Bavaria and retains a rural character with active clubs and well-maintained traditions. The Hauskirta is one of the highlights of the village's festive year.
The Hauskirta is more than just a festive meal: it is a social anchor of the village. Families come together, club members discuss their plans, and guests from the neighboring municipalities of Vilsbiburg, Velden, and Geisenhausen travel in. Between courses, people sing together, and sometimes a small Stubnmusi (traditional folk music ensemble) plays. This mix of enjoyment, music, and conviviality creates its unique character.
The 2026 edition of the Hauskirta Neufraunhofen follows the proven tradition: from 11 AM, the Kirchweih dishes will be served at the Gasthof Rampl. Roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, Schäuferla, and, upon request, the Lower Bavarian Kirtahendl await the guests.
The atmosphere remains familial: villagers, club members, families, and regular guests fill the inn's parlor. In the afternoon, the typical get-together develops – sometimes with Stubnmusi, always with good spirits. The Hauskirta typically ends in the late evening when the last guests leave the inn.
Admission to the Hauskirta is free. Food and drinks are served at usual inn prices. Table reservations are recommended for the Kirchweih meal at Gasthof Rampl, as seats are limited.
