Atmospheric Christmas market in the historic Sand district around Elisabethenkirche
The Adventsmarkt im Sand is Bamberg's more intimate, quieter Christmas market – a deliberate counterpoint to the large Bamberg Christmas market on Maximiliansplatz. It takes place in the historic Sand district, one of the oldest quarters of Bamberg's old town. The venue is the Obere Sandstraße around the medieval Elisabethenkirche and Elisabethenplatz.
The Elisabethenkirche, a Gothic sacred building from the 14th century, and the old townhouses of Obere Sandstraße form an exceptionally atmospheric backdrop for the Christmas market. As darkness falls, the Sand district transforms into a sea of lights from lanterns, fairy lights, and candlelight – like a living Advent scene.
Bamberg is one of the few major German cities whose old town was completely spared from World War II. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The Sand district south of the Regnitz, with its narrow alleys, small inns, and breweries, is the heart of this World Heritage Site. The Adventsmarkt im Sand seamlessly integrates into this authentic, established old town atmosphere.
The market is organized by the interessengemeinschaft intereSAND, an association of restaurateurs, traders, and residents of the Sand district. Their volunteer work shapes the familiar, neighborly character of the market and clearly distinguishes it from the commercial Bamberg main Christmas market.
The 2026 edition of the Adventsmarkt im Sand will take place, as every year, on the first Advent weekend. The first Advent in 2026 falls on November 29 – the market will therefore likely run from Friday, November 27 to Sunday, November 29, 2026.
In the historic Sand district around the Elisabethenkirche, around 30 artisans will present their work, a blacksmith will demonstrate his craft live, and Advent concerts will take place in the Gothic church. The organizer remains the interessengemeinschaft intereSAND. The 2026 program will be published a few weeks before the market at bamberg.info.
Free admission. Food and drinks at usual Christmas market prices (mulled wine, bratwurst, crafts). Advent concerts in the Elisabethenkirche sometimes with a collection.
