A Living Harvest Thanksgiving in the North
Where many North German villages have long delegated Harvest Thanksgiving to the church, Vaale has preserved a rare peculiarity: a large Harvest Thanksgiving Parade through the village, organized by the community itself, with decades of club participation. This tradition is over 60 years old — a continuity that has become increasingly rare in Schleswig-Holstein.
What Makes the Parade Special
The parade is village folklore in its purest form:
- Decorated harvest wagons with corn sheaves, straw figures, and autumn decorations
- The Music Band of the Hohenaspe Volunteer Fire Brigade as musical accompaniment
- Kindergarten and school children in homemade costumes
- Traditional costume groups and rural women's associations
- Farmers with tractors and historical equipment
After the parade, the Warringholz Volunteer Fire Brigade and helpers provide food and drinks for the village. The festival evening keeps the community together until late into the night.
The 777-Year Anniversary in 2026
In 2026, the Harvest Thanksgiving Parade coincides with the celebrations for the community's 777th anniversary. The motto on vaale.de is in verse form: «Vaale, our Vaale, 777 years, Harvest Thanksgiving is clear!» — and the anniversary celebration program is closely linked to the parade.
Vaale in the Steinburg District
Vaale is a small community of about 700 inhabitants in the Steinburg district, located in the geestland between Itzehoe and the West Coast. Embedded in an agriculturally shaped region — Vaale is what defines village identity in Schleswig-Holstein in the 21st century: active club life, regular festival traditions, its own municipal administration, and a 777-year history.
