Birthplace, World Heritage Site, Festival

Halle an der Saale, the largest city in Saxony-Anhalt and the cultural centre of the Saalekreis district, is the birthplace of Georg Friedrich Handel – born in 1685 in Große Nikolaistraße, in the very house that today stands as the world-class Handel House Museum, research institution, and festival organiser. Since 1922, the Handel Festival has commemorated the composer every June, making it the oldest continuously existing Handel festival worldwide. What began in the 1920s as a modest concert series, and developed its own characteristics after the division of Germany in both the GDR and the Federal Republic, is now one of the most important international Baroque festivals.

What distinguishes the festival is the combination of historical location, artistic substance, and thematic focus. Each year, the festival dedicates itself to a special theme that connects Handel's works with contemporary issues. Since 2024, the artistic direction has been led by Florian Amort, who presents Baroque music not as a museum piece, but as a living form on stage – with internationally acclaimed specialists such as René Jacobs, Bruno de Sá, Valer Sabadus, and the Balthasar Neumann Choir & Ensemble under Lionel Sow.

More Than Opera: 27 Venues in and Around Halle

The diversity of venues is part of the festival's identity. In addition to the Opera House, the Ulrichskirche Concert Hall, the Marktkirche „Unser Lieben Frauen", and the Handel House, the festival also uses the historic Goethe-Theater Bad Lauchstädt (Saalekreis) – one of the few surviving theatre buildings from Goethe's era. Concerts are also held in the city's churches, the Stadtgottesacker cemetery, the City Museum, and on public squares. This creates a festival that transforms Halle into a walkable soundscape for ten days.

Saxony-Anhalt as a Classical Music Region

The Handel Festival is not the only major event in the region: along with the Magdeburg Telemann Festival, the Naumburg MDR Summer of Music concerts, and the Bach Festivals in Köthen and Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt boasts one of the densest concentrations of classical music festivals in Europe. Halle itself complements the festival with the year-round programme of the Opera, the Staatskapelle orchestra, and the Handel House, fostering a continuously vibrant Handel tradition.

Händel Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition is themed "Mannsbilder. Heroes – Rulers – Heartbreakers" and explores how masculinity is portrayed in Handel's works. Featuring 80+ events, 27 venues, 10 operas, and 3 oratorios, it opens with Rinaldo at the Oper Halle, and the Händel Prize is awarded to René Jacobs.

The thematic focus of the 2026 festival examines the male figures in Handel's operatic cosmos – portraying them not as monolithic heroes, but in their complexities: between strength and weakness, public expectation and inner turmoil. Artistic Director Florian Amort has curated a dense programme featuring three operas in Bad Lauchstädt, the grand opening at the Oper Halle, and a series of concerts where internationally acclaimed voices – soprano Bruno de Sá, countertenor Valer Sabadus, and ensembles led by Lionel Sow and Michael Hofstetter – give voice to Handel's depictions of men. In 2026, the International Handel Prize is awarded to conductor René Jacobs for his life's work.
