Classical Crossover Open-Air to conclude the Kultoursommer on the Main meadow
For over three decades, the Hanau Summer Night has been the musical closing concert of the Hanau Kultoursommer – a municipal event series that fills Hanau's city center and surrounding castle grounds every summer with free open-air concerts and cultural programs. 2026 marks the 39th edition of the Kultoursommer, whose highlight is traditionally the open-air event on the Main meadow at Philippsruhe Castle.
The venue is the Main meadow directly by the baroque Philippsruhe Castle, the former summer residence of the Counts of Hanau-Münzenberg, now home to the Hanau Historical Museum. The complex is one of the most beautiful baroque castles in Hesse and, together with the adjacent castle gardens and direct view of the Main river, offers an extraordinary concert backdrop. As darkness falls, the castle is illuminated – a visual effect that turns the summer night into a true spectacle.
The main musical act is the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt – an orchestra that calls itself 'Germany's leading crossover orchestra' and has masterfully bridged the gap between classical symphony and rock 'n' roll with unmistakable confidence for over 25 years. In recent years, the orchestra has performed with greats like Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel, and Robbie Williams. The format is sophisticated yet accessible to the public – ideal for a summer open-air evening with a mixed audience.
This year's concert motto is 'Around the World in 80 Days' – a programmatic nod to Jules Verne's novel, which the orchestra uses for a musical journey around the globe. Works and arrangements from the continents Phileas Fogg traverses in Verne's story are expected: London, Suez, Bombay, Hong Kong, San Francisco, New York. The program alternates between classical pieces, film music, folk music, and crossover arrangements from pop and rock.
Like all concerts of the Hanau Kultoursommer, the Summer Night is free to attend. Those who wish to sit in the comfort of a reserved seat in front of the stage can book seat reservations between €17 and €21 via frankfurtticket.de. Those who come with a blanket and picnic basket can settle on the meadow areas around the stage. This mixed format between a formal concert and picnic atmosphere is what gives the Hanau Summer Night its special charm.
The Summer Night is programmatically the finale of the Hanau Kultoursommer, an event series that takes place between May and August at the city's historic venues – Philippsruhe Castle, the castle gardens, Wilhelmsbad Park, and city center squares. The aim is to make Hanau's cultural landscape visible beyond the well-known Brothers Grimm Festival. The Summer Night is the most prestigious event, attracting several thousand visitors to the Main meadow annually.
Hanau, the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm and one of Hesse's medium-sized cities with around 100,000 inhabitants, has invested significantly in its cultural program in recent years. Philippsruhe Castle is not only a venue for the Summer Night but also houses the Hanau Historical Museum and regularly hosts the Brothers Grimm Festival. With the Hanau Summer Night, the city is making a statement by transforming classical concert culture into an open open-air format – a model that many other cities have long adopted, but which Hanau cultivates in a particularly refined form.
The 2026 edition marks the traditional closing concert of the Hanau Kultoursommer. The organizer is the City of Hanau, and the musical organizer is the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt, conducted by Jens Troester. The detailed program for the musical world tour will be published in the weeks before the concert on the city's website and by the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt.
