Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival in the Japanese Garden
When the cherry trees in Rostock's IGA Park bloom in spring, the Japanese Garden transforms into a place of Japanese culture. The German-Japanese Society of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Rostock e.V. then invites you to Hanami, the traditional Japanese cherry blossom festival. Hanami literally means 'flower viewing' and is an important spring ritual in Japan, representing the beauty and, at the same time, the transience of life.
Around the Japanese Garden, visitors can expect a diverse program. Demonstrations of Japanese martial arts, the strategic board game Go, bonsai presentations, and creative hands-on workshops invite discovery and participation. Modern haikus are read in the pavilion, and small stalls around the garden offer graphic novels, handmade items, sweets, and other Japanese specialties.
Taiko drummers provide impressive acoustics, their powerful rhythms shaping the festival. Cosplayers with characters from the worlds of manga, anime, and computer games enrich the event, making the Japanese Garden a meeting place between Japanese tradition and pop culture. A tea ceremony conveys the peace and mindfulness of the Japanese way of life.
The Japanese Garden is part of Rostock's IGA Park in the Schmarl district, which has been one of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's most important green spaces and event venues since the International Garden Exhibition in 2003. Located directly on the water, the garden provides a fitting setting for a festival that focuses on the beauty of nature.
The Hanami festival is one of the spring highlights in the event calendar of the Hanseatic city of Rostock, the largest city in the Rostock district and the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It shows how international culture enriches the festive life of a North German port city.
