When Hamburg's Companies Play Sports for 14 Days
The Hamburgiade is a unique event in Germany: Germany's largest corporate multi-sport event. Over 14 days – in early summer between the end of May and the beginning of June – around 35,000 athletes from approximately 350 Hamburg companies compete against each other in over 20 sports. The spectrum is broad, the concept egalitarian: no membership in BSV Hamburg is required, any company sports group (BSG) can participate.
20+ Sports – The Entire Sporting Spectrum
The disciplines include classic team sports, individual competitions, and unusual game types:
- Team Sports: Football, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Basketball (3×3 and 5×5), Handball
- Water Sports: Swimming, Sailing
- Individual: Tennis, Badminton, Padel, Squash, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Athletics
- Outdoor: Cycling, Bouldering/Climbing
- Crossfit, Indoor Golf, Bowling, Billiards
- Skill / Mind Sports: Chess, Skat, Darts, Foosball
Scope and Inclusion
Unlike professional sports leagues, the Hamburgiade is not performance-elite: hobby players meet semi-professional athletes, small company teams meet large corporate BSGs. The concept follows the motto "For sport, for Hamburg, for you!" – the most medal opportunities in many disciplines rather than focusing on a single main event.
Over 20 Sports Venues Across Hamburg
The competitions take place at over 20 sports venues throughout the Hanseatic city: swimming pools, sports halls, tennis courts, bouldering gyms, the Outer Alster (for sailing), football pitches in the districts. The Hamburgiade is therefore not an event in one central location, but a 14-day city-wide occupation.
Active City Hamburg
The Hamburgiade is part of the Active City Hamburg initiative, with which the city of Hamburg promotes its sporting identity. Hamburg is one of the sportiest cities in Germany – with the Marathon, Cyclassics, Triathlon World Cup, Tennis National Tournament at Rothenbaum, and more. The Hamburgiade fits into this profile as a mass multi-sport format and is aimed at the broad majority of Hamburg's working population.
Medals and Award Ceremony
The Hamburgiade culminates in an award ceremony for the best teams in the overall standings. BSGs collect points over the 14 days in several disciplines; the final ranking determines the most important award of the corporate sports year in Hamburg.
