Saale-Unstrut vintners and one of the largest pottery markets in Germany — autumn on the Marktplatz
What celebrated its premiere for the first time in 2025 and was immediately successful, is entering its second round in 2026: The Hallesches Weinfest on the central market square of the Saalestadt, combined with the traditional Hallesche Töpfermarkt. Over 25,000 visitors came to the premiere in 2025 — a confirmation that the combination of regional wines and arts and crafts has struck a chord in the independent city of Halle in Saxony-Anhalt.
The Hallesche Töpfermarkt already has a longer tradition and is considered one of the largest and most renowned pottery markets in Germany. Around 90 professional ceramic workshops from all over the country present their works on the market square: vessels, tableware, decorative objects, sculptures, jewelry. From functional everyday dishes to artistic individual sculptures, you will find a cross-section of contemporary German ceramic art here — many of the workshops come year after year and have a loyal regular audience in Halle.
The parallel running wine festival is the younger sibling event. Around 15 vintners present their wines — the focus is clearly on the nearby growing region of Saale-Unstrut. At just over 60 km away, Saale-Unstrut is practically on Halle's doorstep and is considered the northernmost contiguous quality wine-growing region in Europe. Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Silvaner, Riesling, Bacchus — the region stands for light, mineral white wines, complemented by red wines and Spätburgunder.
The 2025 premiere generated an estimated gross value added effect of around €740,000 for the city of Halle. Day visitors spend an average of around €29.60 on services in the city center — proof that such cultural events are far more than just a market visit.
The market runs from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon: Friday 4 PM to 9 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 9 PM, Sunday 11 AM to 6 PM. Three days of city center program that optimally showcase the historic market square backdrop with the Roter Turm, Marktkirche, Roland, and Handel monument. The stage program features live music, and regional gastronomy complements the offerings.
The city of Halle is even considering repeating the wine festival in a second format in 2026 during the Händel Festival period (June 7–15, 2026). Should this be implemented, Halle would have two occasions to celebrate Saale-Unstrut wines in the city center.
The 2nd edition of the Halle wine festival, running parallel to the established pottery market, lasts three days. The venue is the historic market square with the Marktkirche, Roter Turm, and Roland. Opening on Friday afternoon, full market activity on Saturday, and a quieter market day on Sunday.
Note: The city of Halle is considering offering the wine festival additionally during the Händel Festival (June 7–15, 2026). Final confirmation will follow in spring 2026.
