About Grommbeermarkt
Grommbeermarkt — edition 2026
In 2026, the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Wustweiler once again transforms a Saturday in October into a day dedicated to the Saarländisch tuber. The festival grounds in front of the Seelbachhalle and the area around the mine shaft are the settings for the market. The entire village participates: the sports club, the kindergarten support association, the music club, and the local carnival association contribute to the food stalls.
The market is set against the backdrop of Wustweiler's autumnal village scenery — colorful autumn leaves, cool air, the aroma of freshly grated potato fritters. Those traveling in the region can easily combine a visit with a hike in the Illtal or a detour to the neighboring Köllertal.

A Village Festival Centered Around the Grommbeer
In the Saarländisch dialect, the potato is called Grommbeer — and this unassuming tuber is the focus of a lovingly staged market in Wustweiler once a year. Since 2016, the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Wustweiler (Local Heritage and Tourism Association) has organized the Grommbeermarkt on a Saturday in October around the Seelbachhalle in the Illingen district. What began as a small initiative has become a fixed date in the event calendar of the Neunkirchen district.
Where the Saarland Meets Potato Dough
Throughout the festival grounds, Wustweiler's clubs serve their own specialties: Grommbeerkichelscher (potato fritters), Grommbeer-Roschdworschd (potato-Bratwurst), Lyonerpfanne (a pan-fried dish with Lyoner sausage) with potatoes, steaming Grommbeersopp (potato soup), and Eierschmeer (a spread made from eggs) from a local chicken farmer. Alongside these, stalls offer pasta with mushrooms, hearty egg dishes, and various small variations on the theme of the tuber. The kindergarten support association handles the sweet side with coffee and homemade cake.
Opening Ceremony with Prince and Princess and the Sound of Hunting Horns
The market traditionally begins at 11 a.m. with a festive keg tapping ceremony. Mayor Andreas Hübgen and local mayor Michael Oswald open the event together with the reigning Potato Prince and Princess — a tongue-in-cheek custom that gives the market its charm. Accompanied musically by hunting horn players, the crowd then disperses among the club stalls, the mine shaft, and the festival grounds.
Family Festival with Tradition
While the adults sample the potato offerings, a bouncy castle and children's activities organized by the kindergarten support association ensure good spirits for the younger visitors. The festival grounds remain open until 6 p.m. — enough time to taste the entire culinary program and chat with club members about traditional Saarländisch village life.
Wustweiler — An Illtal District with Its Own Character
Wustweiler is one of seven districts of the market town of Illingen in the Saarland, located between Neunkirchen and Saarbrücken. With just under 1,700 inhabitants, the village is one of the smaller places in the region but is known for its vibrant club life. The Grommbeermarkt here is more than just a market — it's a showcase of community engagement in the Neunkirchen district, where almost everyone participates.
Why a Visit is Worthwhile
Anyone wishing to experience the Saarland away from the big Volksfeste will find an unvarnished version here: no mass crowds, no large commercial stages, but a village celebrating its culinary tradition for a day. Admission is free, and the audience is a colorful mix of regulars from the Illtal and curious day-trippers from Saarbrücken.
