Franconia's Oldest Street Wine Festival – since 1973 by TSV Grombühl at Wagnerplatz
The Grombühl Street Wine Festival is an institution in Würzburg's wine festival culture: Held annually since 1973, it is considered the oldest street wine festival in Franconia and a pioneer of a format that has found numerous imitators in Würzburg and the Franconian wine region in recent decades. The organizer is TSV Grombühl – a traditional Würzburg sports club that finances its sports departments with the wine festival.
Unlike the large, commercially organized wine festivals at the market square or the Residenzhof, the Grombühl festival is characterized by a genuine club spirit: Over 200 volunteers from TSV Grombühl set up the festival, serve the wines, and take care of catering, security, and dismantling. The proceeds go to the club's activities – youth sports, hall rental, coaches, and club life.
The venue is Wagnerplatz in the Grombühl district of Würzburg – a typical residential area in northern Würzburg, characterized by Wilhelminian-era buildings, students, families, and a vibrant neighborhood culture. The square is furnished with large dining tables under old trees, stages for live music are set up, and the entire street transforms into an open-air wine tavern for four days.
Classic Franconian wines from the region are offered – Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Domina – served from Bocksbeutel bottles or on tap. Accompanied by Franconian sparkling wine, Hugo, and Aperol variations. For food, there is Schäuferle (pork shoulder), Bratwurst (sausage), Franconian cheese, Flammkuchen (flatbread), and pretzels, as well as sweets. The atmosphere is relaxed, neighborly, and unmistakably Würzburgian.
Würzburg is an independent city with around 127,000 inhabitants in Lower Franconia (State of Bavaria) and is considered the Franconian wine metropolis. The city is located on the Main River and is surrounded by some of Germany's most famous vineyards – including the Würzburger Stein, one of the most renowned vineyards in Germany. Würzburg is home to several major wineries (Bürgerspital, Juliusspital, Staatlicher Hofkeller) and hosts over a dozen wine festivals each year – the Grombühl Street Wine Festival is one of the most characteristic among them.
On festival evenings, Franconian and national bands play on the small stage at Wagnerplatz – jazz, folk, cover bands, and singer-songwriters shape the musical mix. The acoustics under the old trees, the murmur of voices, and the clinking of glasses create an atmosphere that many wine and Würzburg fans consider the most beautiful in the city.
Opening on Thursday or Friday evening, followed by four days of festivities at Wagnerplatz. Live music on the open-air stage, Franconian wines from the vineyards around Würzburg, catering by TSV helpers. Festival concludes on Monday or Tuesday with a cozy end at Wagnerplatz.
