Ancient joy of life at the Heinrich Schliemann Museum
The Heinrich Schliemann Museum is dedicated to the life and work of the archaeologist born in Mecklenburg, who brought the ancient world of the early Bronze Age to light with his excavations in Troy and Mycenae. Schliemann spent his childhood in the rectory in Ankershagen, which is now part of the museum complex. The annual Greek Festival connects his legacy with the vibrant Greek culture of the present.
The Greek band Manolis & Co plays live music in the museum park all day long, often accompanied by a dance duo in traditional Greek costume. Ancient craft techniques are demonstrated and offered for participation in open workshops: printing workshop, wire figure design, Raku pottery firing, basket weaving, bookbinding, fire-making, and stone carving. Stilt walkers stroll through the park.
Between 10:30 AM and 5:00 PM, a dense program follows: Quiz about ancient gods, guided tour of the special exhibition on Mycenae, stilt walker show, puppet theatre "Ferdinand – a Bull", musical program with Magdalena von Rohden, and a concluding church tour in the Ankershagen village church.
Ankershagen is located in the Mecklenburg Lake District (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) in the Müritz National Park area, about 15 km northeast of Waren (Müritz). Its rural location on the edge of the Müritz National Park and the unique museum make the Greek Festival a cultural attraction during the summer holidays in the Mecklenburg Lake District.
